Match report
Clash of the Titans is a 1981 fantasy and mythology movie based on the myth of Perseus. The plot being with his grandson Perseus prophesied to bring about his destruction, King Acrisius of Argos casts his daughter Danae and her infant son out to sea in a wooden coffin. In retribution Perseus' father, the god Zeus, orders the god of the sea Poseidon to release an ancient monster known as the Kraken to destroy Argos.
Vice-captain Nad was once again in charge as he took the Legionnaires to Ewell and the Gibraltar Recreation Ground which is the perfect setting to 'GETTING ONE READY'. On a informative note, the naval Battle of Gibraltar took place on 25 April 1607 during the Eighty Years' War when a Dutch fleet surprised and engaged a Spanish fleet anchored at the Bay of Gibraltar. During the four hours of action, the entire Spanish fleet was destroyed.
A hot day welcomed the first ever Clash of the Titans match as the Phoenix Asians took on the Phoenix West Indians with a spicy encounter envisaged with lots of banter and jokes being added to the mix of talent and passion. So the Bhangra Boys and the Calypso Kings had to battle it out to determine who would go home with the Greek goddess of love & beauty Aphrodite and who would leave with the gorgon chthonic gazing upon her would turn onlookers to stone Medusa?
The lyrics from the song 'I know you got soul' by Bobby Byrd would the perfect opening ceremony for this events as words 'you got it, you got it, you got it, I know you got soul hey if you didn't you wouldn't be in here, I know you got soul if you didn't you wouldn't shake that thing'.
Anyway back to the game with Nad losing the toss and being asked by the opposition captain to bat first. What more can I add that Phoenix took advantage of this decision as they amassed two hundred and thirty three runs off their allotted thirty-five overs with Zee hitting three fours to a steady nineteen runs, Jay smashing eight fours to a frantic thirty-nine runs and Ali powering with two sixes to seventeen runs. The main stay of the innings though were Rahul and Nad who broke the fourth wicket partnership as they scored one hundred and thirty seven runs off just eighteen overs which is at a run rate of seven point six an over. Rahul played beautifully with the majority of his runs coming from the boundary over the bowlers head as he made a terrific seventy-one runs (which included six fours and four sixes) and Nad found his form as he grinded out a hard fought fifty (which included four fours and a six).
The moment of the innings was provided by Jazzy Jazz as he did a Sreesanth (dancing as he hit Andre Nel for runs) as he also danced when he hit his first runs. At tea, with the man who makes the goat curry and rice away on holiday, Phoenix were content that a good score was posted on the scoreboard making the chutney sandwiches a little more delicious.
Phoenix came out to ball are fired up knowing that there was a twist in this tale so everyone had to be on their toes at all times. Phoenix with Anup made the breakthrough early but then the Phoenix West Indians put the Asians under some severe pressure. With flamboyancy in their blood, the West Indians put the Asians to the sword as they hit boundary after boundary and launched sixes at ease. After seven overs they had reached seventy seven but they lived a chanced life as many of the big shots just missed the deep fielders.
The game then changed as Nad made the call with Sanj coming on to bowl. Sanj made the breakthrough in his second over getting the opener out caught by a leaping (rolling forward) in slow motion Zee in the gully and his next four victims were bowled as the batsman were beaten by the flight & turn. At the end of his spell, the West Indians were six down and needing a further ninety-six runs of thirteen overs. The Asians had to bowl them out if they wanted to win but every time they took a wicket the next batsman that came in could hit just as big and far as his predecessor.
With the pressure on Nad bowled an incredibly spell as he dried up the runs with his now famously 'Ripper Rashid' deliveries which allowed the run rate to shoot up and Jay showed his class with his seam bowling being unplayable as he took three wickets with two being caught & bowled as they dented the hopes of the West Indians. Finally under extreme pressure Zee held his nerve with his hard to hit late swing bowling as he contained the batsman to only singles and the odd two.
The West Indians were nine down going into the final over with twenty-four runs to win but their main batsman Raj still in. Ali with all the banter being addressed at him was given the ball and it seems he allowed the crowd to get to him. His first ball went for a wide with the West Indians running a single that allowed Raj the strike. The next ball went for four and the ball after went for a huge six. Three balls remaining and twelve runs to win. Ali came steaming in, Raj backed away to hit over extra cover, the ball seamed, the batsman got the edge and Indi took the catch that won the game for the Asians.
Regardless of the results a great game that everyone enjoyed playing in as both teams gave it their all as they made everyone laugh with their jokes and applaud with their talent. In the end, the lyrics from the song 'I don't care' by The Roots come to mind 'I don't care, as long as the bassline's pumpin, The drumline bangin away'. It was like a party out there and the true spirit of the game was on show.
Jack Daniels is also known by JD and Phoenix have their very own JD in the form of Jay Dhillon. Like his Tennessee friend, our JD is also big & brown and thus known as Patiala Peg (Punjabi for a large shot of whiskey) or to those a Large JD. Jay made runs and took wickets at crucial times that allowed Phoenix to pressurise the opposition into mistakes and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Rahul for passing two hundred runs, to Nad for passing one hundred runs, Sanj for passing thirty wickets for the season thus far.
Well done to the Phoenix West Indians for such a fun filled and enjoyable game - it was a pleasure to play you guys. As for Phoenix, what a win as we held onto our nerves with everyone doing their bit be it with the bat, ball or in the field.
By accepting yourself and fully being what you are, your simple presence can make others happy. To quote Tom Bodett (an American author, voice actor and radio host. He is also the current spokesman for the hotel chain Motel 6, whose commercials end with the phrase, "We'll leave the light on for you.") “They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.”
