Bovingdon v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 18 Apr 2010 at 1.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 55 runs
Match report
Phoenix embarks into its fifth season which is a milestone a few in Cranford would have imagined us reaching so a special mention to Jason & Sanj for their dedication to the cause and to the rest of the squad for their enthused support & commitment to get us this far. During the 1960s Bovingdon was used in the production of several World War II films including The War Lover (1961), which starred Steve McQueen and 633 Squadron (1964). Although flying ceased at the airfield in 1969, some flying scenes for the film Hanover Street starring Harrison Ford were shot there in 1978.
The Muppet Show was a television programme featuring a cast of Muppets, which was produced by puppeteer Jim Henson. The television show depicts a vaudeville- or music hall-style song-and-dance variety show, as well as the behind-the-scenes aspects of such a show. Characters such as Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Scooter, Gonzo, Animal, Link Hogthrob, Rizzo the Rat, Zoot, Sam the Eagle, Rowlf the Dog, The Swedish Chef amongst others are well known to us all.
So on to the first game of the season. Fabian once again, at the helm of the Argonauts ship, led his legions onto the journey to Bovingdon. A picturesque village green welcomed us on a lovely spring day. A warm sun and even warmer smiles welcomed each team as Fabian won the toss and elected to make use of the conditions first. The question is would Phoenix be the Squadron fighters that the area ins known for or will it be another Muppet show.
The now usual and immovable opening pair of Gonzo Fabian and Rizzo the Rat Tushar gave Phoenix an excellent start as they scored freely at eight runs per over. Fabian started were he left off last season, hitting the first ball of the innings for a six. Fabian, akin to Usain Bolt, kicked his straps and got off to a flyer has he crashed, banged and walloped to a quick fire twenty-seven (hitting three fours and a six). At the loss of his wicket, he helped Phoenix get to forty-eight in just six overs.
In came Jay and started the same way as Fabian as he hit his second ball for a maximum. During the off-season nets he was known to the team as 'Animal' with his big hitting and he carried this form onto the game. He battered and bruised his way to an aggressive fifty-one (hitting five fours and two sixes). Zoot Nad shared his experience with two steady partnership and as he helped Phoenix through a difficult period.
Something never change as Phoenix then lost seven wickets for thirty-six runs in nine overs with Bovingdon's Woodwood claiming five wickets. At tea, Phoenix has posted one hundred and sixty five runs on what was a very slow and low wicket and needed to bowl well if they wanted a positive results from the game.
Sam the Eagle Shaunak and Rowlf the Dog Sofian opened the attack for Phoenix with pace & fire and soon had the Bovingdon batsman in trouble. They bowled beautifully with swing and seam as they ripped open the top order with Shaunak taking four wickets and Sofian taking two. Phoenix had Bovingdon struggling for forty-eight for six after twelve overs.
Scooter Indi did his best behind the stumps with the low bounce and some wayward legside deliveries but he had Fozzie Bear Zee for company in the slips who never is shy in saying a word or two. The Swedish Chef Kashif after an expensive start came back strong conceding only a handful of runs of his final three overs and Kermit the Frog Sanj chipping in with two wickets.
Phoenix soon started to sing the Muppet Show theme song:
It's time to play the music
It's time to light the lights
t's time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show tonight.
It's time to put on makeup
It's time to dress up right
It's time to raise the curtain on the Muppet Show tonight.
Why do we always come here
I guess we'll never know
It's like a kind of torture
To have to watch the show
And now let's get things started
Why don't you get things started
It's time to get things started
On the most sensational inspirational celebrational Muppetational
This is what we call the Muppet Show!
The man of the match award goes to Shaunak for his four wickets that led us to victory.
Along time ago there was Man from Atlantis who was half man and half fish but Phoenix have the Men from Amazer who are are half men and half amazing. This season Indi retired his bat called the BDM Amazer and in honour of the this event we are introducing the BDM Amazer award which goes to an amazing moment of the match (which makes us all laugh). The first award of this kind goes to Link Hogthrob Richard who came late, got out for a duck and then dived for a the ball had already passed him.
A special thanks to Bovingdon for being tremendous hosts and enjoying the banter in a spirited way. As for Phoenix, they continued the form at the latter part of last season and yet again the banter and jokes added value and fun to the days enjoyment.
To quote Michael Jordan (NBA star who played shooting guard for the Chicago Bulls in the 1990's) 'Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game.'
