Kempton v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 25 Apr 2010 at 1.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 20 runs
Match report
Phoenix were buoyant after last weeks victory and Fabian led his legions of doom to the ever so popular game versus Kempton. Kempton is the league home of many of Phoenix's players including the Famous Five Fabian, Nad, Noman, Jay and Mo. Homecoming is a 2009 movie directed by Morgan J. Freeman is about a jilted ex-girlfriend who plots revenge after her former beau comes back to their hometown with a new lover.
Last season Phoenix won a double bill clean sweep against Kempton but would this year be a sweet homecoming for the Famous Five or would Kempton have the last laugh. As long as everyone Have a Wonderful Time (Five Have A Wonderful Time published in 1952 was the eleventh novel written by Enid Blyton) and Have Plenty of Fun (Five Have Plenty Of Fun published in 1969 was the fourteenth novel written by Enid Blyton).
Phoenix started the day well when Fabian won the toss and elected to field first. Fabian unleashed his firepower and like at Kempton's Bistro In The Panoramic Bar & Restaurant Handicap, they too were akin to the horse 'Flying Squad'. Phoenix as a unit bowled, fielded and caught well (barring a few mishaps) and never let Kempton settle into any rhythm as they kept on losing wickets at crucial times. Highlights were Umair who bowled a beauty that moved away from a middle & leg line to hit the top off off, Shaunak who bowled a unplayable yorker, Nad who ripped one past the defending batsman taking leg stump and Noman holding onto a skier of a catch.
At tea, like at Kempton's Digibet Median Auction Maiden Stakes, they needed a drink and a bite to eat as they gave it their all like the horse 'Huff And Puff'. Phoenix had restricted Kempton to one hundred and forty nine and needed to bat with discipline if they wanted to taste victory. Phoenix started very poorly and at fifty for five Phoenix were in deep trouble and like at Kempton's Classified Stakes, Phoenix did not want to be the horse 'Blushing Maid'. Tushar, Mo and Shaunak held the middle order with first solid resistance and then counterattacking play as they got Phoenix to thirty-six runs to victory with ten overs to go.
Alas Phoenix succumbed to Kempton's good bowling & pressure and were finally bowled out twenty runs short. Fabian was left to rue the missed opportunity but like Kempton's Digibet Sports Betting Handicap he sang the same tune as the horse 'Bohemian Melody'. With no regrets and for Phoenix giving Kempton a run for their money Fabian called time for the lads to get it on with Kempton For Conferences Handicap's 'Boho Chic' and unleash their own court play like Kempton's Digibet.com Handicap 'Ilie Nastase'.
The man of the match award goes to Umair for an impressive debut as he took wickets, took a catch, umpired, scored and offered to open the innings when a few off the senior guys refused. The half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Shaunak who fielded a ball with his big buttocks (preventing a second run) and then bowling the batsman for a golden duck off the very next ball.
A special thanks to Kempton for playing the game as it should be with strong banter and a competitive edge in a friendly atmosphere . As for Phoenix, the chances were there to win but alas to quote Jean Nidetch (b. 1923, Brooklyn, New York, founder of the Weight Watchers organization) "It's choice--not chance--that determines your destiny.”
Winning comes from the lessons learnt when faced with loss so to quote Ralph Waldo Emerson (American Poet, Lecturer and Essayist, 1803-1882) "When a man is pushed, tormented, defeated, he has a chance to learn something”
