Match report With theatre in the air and Phoenix a team who loves to perfom two plays are out in London. One being The Merchants of Bollywood that charts the history of the world’s largest and most prolific film industry, and the dynasty of stars that have lit its way over generations. Featuring a cast of 40 performers and an extravagant array of over 1,000 glittering costumes, this turbo-charged, joyfully uplifting show is a riot of swirling colours, high-energy music and sensational dance scenes choreographed by one of Bollywood’s top young choreographers, Vaibhavi Merchant.

The other being Zayed and the Dream the new extravagant theatrical creation by the Caracalla Dance Theatre. History meets art in the legendary story of seven horsemen travellers in the sands of time on a journey in search of the one who will forever leave his mark on the Arabian desert and carve his name as a hero of civilisation.

Also Ganesha in the Hindu faith is the Lord of Obstacles, both of a material and spiritual order. Today, Hindus across India celebrate the Ganapati festival with great fervour, though it is most popular in the state of Maharashtra.

It was not a good start to the week with Crownwood cancelling our fixture with themselves but we found new opposition in the form of Woodlawn. With victory under their belt Fabian led his legion Of Warriors to the the short trip to Hampton. A lovely day welcomed both teams but rain was predicted in the late afternoon so fingers crossed when Fabian won the toss and decided to bat first.

Phoenix continued their batting form as per last week as they began to find the boundary with ease, despite the early loss of Fabian, Tush and Jay settled comfortably as they hit one hundred and twelve runs in just thirteen overs. Jay tormented the bowlers as he hit thirteen fours and five sixes but fell two short of a deserved century. Tushar battled it out for a persistent twenty-eight runs and Noman came in for the final hurrah as he hit nine fours in making a fabulous forty-seven runs. At tea, Phoenix had declared on two hundred and seventeen off just thirty one overs.

Phoenix came out to bowl in a bouyant mood as they had a good tea. Sanj opened the bowling and soon had the breakthrough with Zee taking a spectular catch diving forward in the slips as he scooped the ball just before he and the ball hit the ground. The scene was like watching a slow motion reply but a tremendous effort from the big man.

Soon after Woodlawn got back into the groove and started to find the boundary. With the pressure back on Phoneix, the Phoenix fielders dropped their heads as they thought that an unlikely run chase was about to happen. Fabian sensing the tension & lack of focus geed up the boys and quickly made some changes.

The mood of the team suddenly got better when Sanj shouted 'Ganpati Moriya' after Ganesh from Woodlawn was defending with intense concentration. Laughter rang across the field and smiles on everyone's faces (both teams) said it all. Phoenix always does well when the jokes and banter at extreme funny propotions.

Zee and Anup were brought into the attack and with that the game changed to Phoenix's favour. Zee bowled an expectionally well with great accuracy & swing as he didnt give the Woodlawn batsman any room to free their arms. Zee made the breakthrough in his first over and with Anup gaining confidence & rhythm got his just rewards soon after. They both took Phoenix to the edge of victory with four wickets to get in about ten overs before the final heavy downpour ended all chances of win. Both captains shook hands and the game ended in a draw.

The man of the match award goes to Jay for his effortless boundry hitting. The half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Zee who took a wonderful catch diving at first slip. A special mention to Jay for passing hundred runs for the season thus far.

A special thanks to Woodlawn for being tremendous hosts and enjoying the fun & laughing with us during the banter. As for Phoenix, the eleven cricketing travellers left their mark on the hampton playing fields as we carved out our name in honour as Woodlawn invited us back next year for another fixture. Phoenix is a cast of 40 performers and an extravagant array of personas who joyfully uplift the game with a riot of jokes, high-energy banter and sensational cricket.

I will find humor in my everyday life by looking for people I can laugh with. To quote Mark Twain (American Humorist, Writer and Lecturer. 1835-1910) “Humor is the great thing, the saving thing. The minute it crops up, all our irritation and resentments slip away, and a sunny spirit takes their place.”
