O.C.T v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 30 May 2010 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 33 runs
Match report
On 30 May 1431 at Rouen in English-controlled Normandy, Joan of Arc, the peasant girl who became the saviour of France, is burned at the stake for heresy.
Joan was born in 1412, the daughter of a tenant farmer at Domremy, on the borders of the duchies of Bar and Lorraine. In 1415, the Hundred Years War between England and France entered a crucial phase when the young King Henry V of England invaded France and won a series of decisive victories against the forces of King Charles VI. By the time of Henry's death in August 1422, the English and their French-Burgundian allies controlled Aquitaine and most of northern France, including Paris.
As a source of military inspiration, Joan of Arc helped turn the Hundred Years War firmly in France's favour. By 1453, Charles VII had reconquered all of France except for Calais, which the English relinquished in 1558. In 1920, Joan of Arc, one of the great heroes of French history, was recognised as a Christian saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
On the same day 2010, with Fabian out injured Nad led his Cartel to the game versus OCT. With the sun out and Bob Marley playing on the stereo it was time for chillaxing and to take things slowly. This fixture is one of Phoenix favourite as the banter, jokes and homemade cakes go down with delight for both teams.
Phoenix came out to bat on a difficult pitch and after a cautious start began slowly to open up. Without too many surprises and hard graft Phoenix closed their innings on one hundred and eighty five runs with solid contributions from Sofian who continues his great form with back to back fifties (which inculded ten fours), from Jay who powered to a quick twenty-six (which inculded four fours) and finally to Noman who without much fuss scored forty-two (which inculded six fours).
At tea Phoenix could eat well as they knew if they bowled well they would win the game. The OCT cricket match is just an excuse for everyone to indulge in Mrs Harrison's and Mrs Mooney's homemade specials and we were not disappointed as a lemon cake and a carrot & nut cake were on offer.
Phoenix came out onto the field bouyant, full and ready to take control. Shaunak quickly made the breakthroughs and soon after OCT began to lose wickets regularly. With OCT stuttering Phoenix knew they were still in a match with Keeble still a the wicket who was playing beautifully as he defended well the good balls and dispatched the bad balls to the boundary with ease. At seventy-three not out Keeble was batting with class and was closing on to an unlikely victory for OCT but as a source of cricketing inspiration, Nad helped turn the five Years War firmly in Phoenix's favour taking Keeble's crucial wicket.
Soon after handshakes allround and both teams wondered off the pitch to jokes, laughter and applause - just like the way the day started.
The man of the match award goes to Noman for holding the innings together after the loss of the top three batsman. The half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Noman who was witnessed, like a child, running around the boundary playing catch ball by himself to the shout off or oohs and ahhs from the team. A special mention to Noman for passing one hundred runs and to Shaunak and Nad for passing ten wickets for the season thus far.
A special thanks to OCT for being such tremendous people who have the love and respect for the game as well as the opposiiton. As for Phoenix, they invaded Totteridge and were deemed victorious as they left with a deep cemented cricketing friendship and respect. Much of the vitality in a friendship lies in the honouring of differences, not simply in the enjoyment of similarities.
To quote Tennessee Williams (American playwright. 1911-1983) “Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose.”
