Kempton v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 14 May 2006 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 6 wickets

Match report Horse racing is an equestrian sport which has been practiced over the centuries; the chariot races of Roman times are an early example, as is the contest of the steeds of the god Odin and the giant Hrungnir in Norse mythology.

So after brushing away the cobwebs, Jason led his Argonauts to the beautiful and meticulous grounds of Kempton. Phoenix were welcomed by a green sea of grass and lushing waves of trees engulfing the sea itself. The idyllic surroundings were perfect. On an overcast day, Kempton won the toss and put Phoenix into bat first in this timed game.

Phoenix stuttered in the starting gate and soon were were in deep trouble as they slowly trotted to thirty five for five in twelve overs. Nad got the ball of the day on the very first ball of the game when Jack bowled him with a ball the pitched and moved in. Jack was a constant threat to the batsman and finished with five wickets.

Our newest member Zahir soon steadied the score with some aggressive stroke play but when he just got settled he was out for a well played twenty four as he mis-timed a defensive push to mid-off. Then our very own thoroughbred Jim came in and with Gary helped Phoenix canter past hundred. They batted with watchful defence & sublime placement which gave Phoenix the foundation to make a respectable score.

The last few overs saw a frenzy of boundaries as our Stallion & Mustang Jason and Indi helped Phoenix gallop to a respectable score of hundred and seventy two. Phoenix needed a good start in order to defend their score which was about thirty runs short of a good score. Kempton at this stage were the front runner.

Gary bowled with pace and Sanj with control as Kempton struggled to fifty two for two at the break for twenty overs. Kempton needed six runs an over there after to win this meeting.

At this stage Phoenix were leading by a head with the backstretch finally approaching and a sudden flick of the whip would be the difference to which team came out in front. Nad kept the pressure up with some super bowling and Steve came in taking a brilliant wicket with some excellent display of swing bowling.

At ten overs to go Kempton needed sixty two runs to win. In the final furlong both teams were going all out to win. The bookies at this stage would find it hard to back a winner - would it be the Dark Horse in Phoenix or the Backed Horse in Kempton.

Phoenix's fielding was superb as they restricted the boundaries but Kempton kept on finding the gaps. Then a final bolt in the back straight from Kempton took victory away from Phoenix as they reached their target with two overs to spare.

Well done to Kempton for a great game and their hospitality. The game was played in the spirit of how cricket should be played were everyone played a part in making this a fun day out.
