Kempton v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 02 Jul 2006 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 4 wickets
Match report
There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered. Nelson Mandela (1918 - ), 'A Long Walk to Freedom'
So Phoenix were invited back to Kempton for their second game of the season. A very hot day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss Jason without surprise elected to bat first. The wicket looked a belter of a track to bat on with a rocket fast out field. Jason and his Argonauts needed to perform well with passion, energy and camaraderie if they wanted to wash away the past two performances as minor glitches.
After a shaky start losing two wickets in the first five overs, Tusher and Nad soon steadied the ship. Nad then took the game to Kempton as he soon started to blast the bowling to all corners of the ground. A masterful innings which ignited Phoenix's fire as he continued to dominate the bowling and with Tusher, they put on seventy one runs off twelve overs. Nad was eventually out for forty nine whilst trying to hit another huge six - he made forty two runs in boundaries hitting six fours and three sixes. Tusher kept one end ticking over during the Nad onslaught and he was tragically run out for twenty four (scoring four fours).
New at the crease were Jim and Jason. After a slow start then soon turned on the turbo engines and started the fun fest with some sublime shot making and excellent running. They put on eighty nine off fourteen overs. Jason finally fell for a super thirty three (scoring five fours and a six) as he tried to up the rate.
Jim in the previous game against Kempton made forty one but this time he went on to better that. He made a brilliant fifty nine (scoring seven fours and a six) has he helped Phoenix pass two hundred. He played some exquisite shots of the highest order piercing the fielders as the ball raced to the boundary.
The connection between Cricket and Dentistry can now be inscribed into legend. Phoenix is cricket, Cricket is to batting, Vapiwala likes to bat, Bats are to vampires, Vampires are associated to fangs, Fangs are teeth, Teeth are to dentist and Jim is a dentist.
Indi and Fabian saw Phoenix home with a final flurry of runs with Indi getting out after making a quick twenty five (scoring one four and a six) and Fabian undefeated scoring eleven runs in the six balls that he faced.
Phoenix's final total was an impressive two hundred and thirty five which included twenty three fours and six sixes. Phoenix needed to field and bowl well if they wanted to win this game.
Ali opened the bowling pace, passion and power and the Kempton batsman found it hard to get him away. The pressure built and soon Kempton were soon in trouble as Rahul Nehra took is first wicket on debut as Zahir took a great catch in gully. Soon after Zahir was in the action again as he took another fine catch in slips of Fabian bowling and in the same over Fabian made a great diving stop which resulted in running out the batsman. After another tight over from Ali the heat was on Kempton as Fabian took his second wicket as Nad made a catch look easy in the deep.
At this stage Kempton were forty nine two for four off ten overs and in trouble. But Kempton had a strong batting line up and soon got the run chase back on track. They started to find the boundaries with ease with some splendid stroke play and some inept fielding by the Phoenix fielders. Nad and Sanj broke through with two wickets leaving Kempton needing sixty four runs in the final ten overs with four wickets left.
Ali bowled at the death and was by far the best bowler on the day conceding only twenty four runs off his eight overs on a day when over four hundred and fifty runs were scored. Loveridge then gave a chance which was not taken by Phoenix and the crucial dropped catch swung the game into Kempton's favour as he went on to make an excellent unbeaten sixty one as he hit the winning runs in the final over of the day.
Well Done Kempton for another excellent game and great hospitality.
As for Phoenix, What is defeat? Nothing but education; nothing but the first step to something better. Wendell Phillips (1811 - 1884).
