Bagshot v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 03 Sep 2006 at 1pm

Match report
Shichifukujin - seven Japanese gods who control different aspects of happiness through luck. The second god in the group is Bishamon, the god of luck in battle and defence.
Bhalle - Punjabi slang term for excellent/good.
Once again a weakened but competitive side which included three guests, a colt and an injured skipper went out to battle and keep the Phoenix flag flying high in pride. With only a few games left until the season ends, the much travelled Phoenix wanderers mustered up their energies for the short voyage to Bagshot for a timed game.
A beautiful ground surrounded by greenery welcomed Phoenix and as everyone went to the field the sun came out making it a perfect day & place to play cricket. With the rain falling over the past week and the Sun starting to peak its head Sanjeev on winning the toss had no hesitation in asking the opposition to bat first.
Farhan and Anup opened the bowling and bowled with control, pace and movement. They bowled beautifully has they had the Bagshot openers playing & missing with the ball just missing both the edge of the bat and the stumps. With tight and energetic fielding the Phoenix samurai's restricted the runs scoring. After their first spell they had figures of fourteen runs off seven overs and twelve runs of six overs respectively.
Umair then came on and soon got the break through with a beauty of a ball and after his first spell conceded only sixteen runs off eight overs. Bagshot after thirty overs were one hundred for two.
But alas Bishamon's battle luck was not favouring Phoenix as the luck deserted the bowlers as mis-timed shots fell in empty spaces and edges flying wide of the fielders. Sanjeev dropped two difficult chances in slip and importantly one being off Grinstead(J).
Bagshot riding their luck soon got settled into a groove and then began to plunder the Phoenix bowling scoring one hundred and thirty one runs in the next thirteen overs with Grinstead(J) unbeaten on eight five and Norman unbeaten on seventy six. Bagshot finally declaring their innings on two hundred and thirty one off forty three overs.
Phoenix needed to bat well to either win or draw the game. Zahir opened up the innings and began the assault has he found the boundary at will. He played brilliantly with some excellent pull shots has he went onto a superb maiden fifty (which included eleven fours) but the pressure was still on has Phoenix lost wickets cheaply.
Varun came in and from the very off was finding the middle of his bat and upped the tempo. He 'drove' effortlessly, with shots the Saverimuttu's would have been proud to have played, has he made an excellent twenty eight (which included five fours and a six) before getting run out to a direct hit after some hesitation in the running with Anup.
At the start of the final twenty overs Phoenix were one hundred and one for five. Phoenix needed to bat out the final twenty overs to avoid defeat but alas Bishamon's defence luck was not favouring Phoenix as a record breaking five ducks were marked in the scorebook.
A special mention to Anup who came in the nineteen over and battled until the forty first has he tried to salvage a draw. He made a superb forty one (which included six fours and a six) playing with great freedom and technique but Grinstead(W) ended the Phoenix resistance bowling Anup with an excellent delivery with just less than three overs to spare.
Well done to Bagshot for a great game, sense of fun & hospitality where everyone had fun witnessing some Bhalleshots at Bagshot. See you guys next year.
As for Phoenix, to quote Albert Einstein (Out of My Later Years ) 'Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Full effort is full victory'. A great effort by Phoenix to make this a great game to play.
