Indian Gymkhana v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 17 Sep 2006 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 21 runs
Match report
Concentration - The act or process of concentrating, especially the fixing of close, undivided attention.
What was meant to be the last game of the season has now become the penultimate fixture since the guys wanted to play more and their request has been fulfilled with a fixture against Long Ditton next week.
So the Phoenix faithful went the short distance to Osterley to play Indian Gymkhana in this local derby. All the players from teams know each for they either went to the same school, played with each other in the same clubs or drank at the same pub.
A bright warm afternoon welcomed both teams and on winning the toss, the opposing team's captain had no hesitation in batting first.
Ali and Anup opened up the innings and soon had the batsmen playing & missing as they bowled with pace and precision getting Phoenix off to a great start restricting the scoring to only three runs per over. Ali conceded only nineteen runs of his allotted eight overs and Anup finished with three wickets. Vishal and Sanj kept the pressure on where they produced a wonderful spell conceding only two leg byes in five overs bowled. Fabian bowled with great control under pressure finishing with three wickets has the Gymkhana batsman started to hit out in the late overs.
The ground fielding was sharp all round with a special mention to Rahul who was amazing in the cover region where he didn't allow anything to pass him. Phoenix created two run outs - the first one Shiv got to the ball quickly & threw the ball at pace perfectly over the stumps for Sanj to take off the bails with the batsman still half way down the track. Second one Varun swooped down from mid-wicket and with a pick up & throw ran the batsman out with a direct hit.
Indian Gymkhana's final score was a gettable one hundred and fifty two but Phoenix knew that they should have bowled the opposition for twenty runs less since lost focus has they dropped two batsmen early in their innings who went onto make forty six and eighteen.
Tea was a nice surprise as Dal Makhani, Chicken Curry, Rice and Salad was served. With curry in the belly everyone was fired up to the win this game.
Zahir and Shiv opened the innings and gave a Phoenix a slow but steady start to the innings. The key was to build partnerships in readiness for a final onslaught. Zahir was playing well when he mis-timed a full toss and was caught in cover which brought Varun to the crease. His first scoring shot was a boundary and was looking at ease.
Then Phoenix lost focus once again as they lost the next four wickets in four overs for only eight runs. Phoenix slumped from fifty for one in the seventeenth over to fifty eight for five in the twentieth. Shiv continued to play a rock like innings and with Jason upping the tempo by his side, victory was still in sight. They put on forty seven in the next nine overs which gave Phoenix a glimmer of a hope.
This hope was dashed as Phoenix lost focus for the third time as they lost the next three wickets in two overs for only one run, leaving them on one hundred and six for eight in the thirtieth over.
Shiv was finally out for a gutsy and hard fought thirty nine (which included four fours and twenty one singles) and the innings ended has Vishal tried to hit out in the final few overs.
Well done to Indian Gymkhana for a well fought and above all an humorous affair. See you guys next year.
As for Phoenix we either need to hire a Mr Fashanu to find our focus or read the book 'Concentration a Guide to Mental Mastery' by Mouni Sadhu for we lost the game when we had it won.
