Cove v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 17 Jun 2012 at 14:00
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 5 runs
Match report
The sun was out and the scars of last weeks collapse were still fresh in the Phoenix's mindset. Kully at the forefront of the ship set on his voyage, like Sinbad, with the lads to the Kingdom of Cove. There are many tales in 'The Book of One Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights)' with stories of mystery, magic and hope. Stories such as:
Tale of the Bull and the Ass
Tale of the Hashish Eater
The Enchanted Horse
The Three Unfortunate Lovers
Tale of the Lover Who Feigned Himself a Thief
Voyages of SInbad
Aladdin and The Wonderful Lamp
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves
The Lovers of the Banu Ozrah
A sunny day and a belter of a track welcomed both sides and on winning the toss Kully had no hesitation in batting first. It seems like last weeks innings versus Thames Ditton had replayed itself, what type of magic was this?
Seems more like Voodoo and the batting curse had been inflicted on the team. After looking comfortable at one hundred and two for two, Phoenix suddenly collapsed and were bowled out for 146 with Kully top scoring with fifty one. Phoenix must have been on the Hashish Eater to allow this to happen two weeks in a row. At tea, Phoenix need a mircale as if from one of the stories from the Arabian Nights.
To Kully's credit he did not give up hope of winning. Aman and Sanj opened the bowling and bowled beautifully in tandem with Cove only scoring ten runs of the first eight overs. With the pressure mounting on Cove, the miracle of Phoenix happened. Kully must have stolen Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp and rubbed & polished it very hard. The bowling continued to impress, the fielding was top rate with Ikie setting the example for ground fielding and the catches offered being gobbled up easily.
Midway through the Cove innings, the Cove batsmen got a handle on things and were on course for a victory. They batted like an Enchanted Horse but soon fell away like Three Unfortunate Lovers. Fabian came on a very decisive point of the game and was like the Lover Who Feigned Himself a Thief turned on his spell and weaved his magic. The runs dried up and the pressure mounted again. Rowdy and Aman came back for a second deadly spell and it was all but over as Cove needed thirteen runs of the final over. Shaunak bowled a disciplined over that saw Phoenix win by five runs.
The man of the match award goes to Ikie for his excellent fielding and the half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Rowdy for facing the hat-trick ball again (that’s three times in two weeks). A special mention to Fabian for the passing hundred runs for the season thus far.
Well done to Cove for such an enthralling match. As for Phoenix, the team went from the Bull and the Ass to become the Lovers of the Banu Ozrah. “Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength.” A great example of teamwork with all eleven players contributing in the win.
To quote Tom Robbins (American Novelist. b.1936) “Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach.”
