Ealing Three Bridges v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 22 Jul 2012 at 14:00
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 53 runs

Match report A very hot day said hello to the Phoenix Boys and it was a mood to party. Why but the occassion demanded it as the Phoenix Indians clashed with the Ealing Three Bridges (ETB) West Indians - could a fusion of Bhangra & Calypso integrate the game of cricket as well as minds & souls of the generations that were either playing or watching. "Caribbean Queen" is a song by Billy Ocean. Co-written and co-produced by Keith Diamond, it climbed to number one on both the soul singles and Hot 100, in the U.S.and number six in the UK in 1984.

The Phoenix batsman were troubled by the pace and movement of ETB bowlers and no one really came to terms with it. Even to say Sanj was out for the very first time this season in this match ... is that a miraculous or what? The batting started slowly and continued to be poor but for Viju who made the game look every so simple. Viju smashed his way to an impressive fifty-six runs which included six fours and a six. He may be predominantly VVS Laxman but he has the odd shot in the covers to please the cynics.

At tea we were in a comfortable position has we ate Chicken Curry, Veg Curry, Rice and hot chilli sauce. The question at this moment of time was what runs were we going to contain both on and off the field. A very full, over-eaten and sleepy side went on out to the field to face the music. The Caribbean Calypso was in flow flow as the ETB smashed fours & sixes to get off to a flying start but the Bhangra Boys had the last laugh. Spin twins Wendel & Sanj started & ended proceedings but it was Rowdy's Spanish Fly Swing that broke the camels back as he stormed to his maiden five wicket haul.

Phoenix won the game in the end with ease but seems a new bond of friendship was established between the two sides. If you listened closely you could hear us singing the Billy Ocean hit:

Caribbean Queen
Now we're sharing the same dream
And our hearts they beat as one
No more love on the run

I lose my cool when she steps in the room
And I get so excited just from her perfume
Electric eyes that you can't ignore
And passion burns you like never before

The man of the match award goes to Rowdy for his five wickets & excellant bowling and the half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Viju who found us via gumtree and then hit a fifty. A special mention to Kully for the passing the thousand run mark for the club thus far.

Well done to Ealing Three Bridges who play the game hard but enjoy the banter & laughter as much as we dor. As for Phoenix, sometimes you put walls up not to keep people out, but to see who cares enough to break them down. A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are - this is what defines Phoenix.

To quote Tennessee Williams (American playwright. 1911-1983) “Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose.”
