Ashford v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 29 Jul 2012 at 14:00
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 30 runs
Match report
The local derby for Captain Kully was the inspiration today for everyone to play even though the heavens had opened and we were all surrounded by doom & gloom. The Guns of Navarone is a 1961 British-American Action/Adventure war film directed by J. Lee Thompson and based on Alistair MacLean's 1957 novel The Guns of Navarone about the Dodecanese Campaign of World War II. It stars Gregory Peck, James Robertson Justice, David Niven and Anthony Quinn, along with Anthony Quayle, and Stanley Baker. The book and the film share the same basic plot: the efforts of an Allied commando team to destroy a seemingly impregnable German fortress that threatens Allied naval ships in the Aegean Sea, and prevents 2,000 isolated British troops from being rescued.
Ashford won the toss and had no hesitation in asking Phoenix to bat first. It was their home ground, rain reduced match, overcast conditions and a juicy wicket must been the thinking of their wise captain when suddenly Phoenix found themselves at forty runs for seven wickets down. The Fab four (Kully, Fab, Wendel & Harjit) had just scored two runs between them.
An embrassing defeat was looming. Alas the Phoenix has resurrected themselves many times before and produced their own Gregory 'Shaunak' Peck & Anthony 'Ali' Quinn to fight back with our own Guns of Haveahoe. Shaunak blasted his way to fifty five (which included ten fours) and Ali bullied his way to forty six (which included eight fours) as they forged a ninety six run partnership that meant at tea Ashford had to chase one hundred and sixty seven to win off thrity five overs.
Ashford after losing a quicket wicket looked dangerous as they went to drinks with hunded on the board & one wicket down.
An embrassing defeat was looming. Alas the Phoenix has resurrected themselves many times before and produced their own David 'Harjit' Niven & Stanley 'Wendel' Baker to fight back with our own Guns of Haveahoe. They took five wickets between them to go thorough the middle order with ease to set up the most unlikely win.
The man of the match award goes to Ali for top scoring heavily in a match winning partnership with Shaunak & taking a wicket of their dangerous opener and the half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Wendel for some quick thinking as he run out the opposition batsman who was screaming at his partner for not taking the second run. A special mention to Shanunak for the passing the hundred runs mark for the season thus far.
Well done to Ashford for a hard fought game and playing/seeing through the awful weather. As for Phoenix, Kully was the only person who thought we could win at forty for seven. He reminded us of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (German Playwright, Poet, Novelist and Dramatist. 1749-1832) who said "In all things it is better to hope than to despair”.
To quote Helen Keller (American Author and Educator who was blind and deaf. 1880-1968) “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”
