Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 72 runs
Match report
With Kully and Fabian both away on holiday duties it was Sanj's turn to be skipper of the Phoenix ship. A very hot summers day welcomed the teams and on winning the toss the Windsor captain had no hesitation in batting first. He then casually informed Sanj as he walked of the pitch that WIndsor were strong today as they fielded players mainly from their first & second elevens. Not a good start.
Catch Me If You Can is a 2002 American biographical crime film based on the life of Frank Abagnale, Jr., who, before his 19th birthday, successfully performed cons worth millions of dollars by posing as a Pan American World Airways pilot, a Georgia doctor, and a Louisiana parish prosecutor. His primary crime was check fraud; he became so skillful that the FBI eventually turned to him for help in catching other check forgers. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Abagnale, Tom Hanks as Hanratty, along with Christopher Walken, Amy Adams, Martin Sheen, and Nathalie Baye.
As always Sanj took to the field full of hope and optimisim. The idea was to give everyone a game but above all give the opponents a good game & if we can a run for their money. Rowdy and new boy Goldie opened the bowling with pace and unnervy accuracy. Soon enough Windsor were two down with only fourteen runs on the board as their two first team openers were back in the hutch. All looked hopeful.
Sanj came on to bowl and the three & four second team batsman both gave chances to be caught but it seems the ball took on the persona of Frank Abagnal as it taunted us with 'Catch me if you can' as we spilled the oppurtunities offered. All in all Phoenix played Hanratty as we tried to catch the ball thoughout the afternoon without luck as we missed seven simple chances. The Windsor batsman rode their luck and punished Phoenix as one scored a century and the other two fifties.
At tea, Phoenix needed a daunting two hundred and sixty five to win off their alloted forty overs. The chase should have been less than two hundred and infact less than one hundred eighty but alas this is cricket. Phoenix gave a good account for themselves in the chase as they were eventually bowled out for one hundred and ninety two runs off just thirty one overs. Lav batted brilliantly for his eighty (he smashed fifteen fours and a six) and tears that flowed at the loss of his wicket proved how hard we tried and how strong the passion we have. Alex continued to show his form with an excellant twenty seven but was out as he tried to keep up with the run rate.
The man of the match award goes to Sanj for bowling splendidly and the half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Alex for speaking english. A special mention to Lav for passing the three hundred runs mark and Vishal for passing the one hundred runs mark for this season thus far.
Well done to Windsor who play the game to their strengths and thus allowing ourselves the oppurtunity to excel as well. As for Phoenix, its better to play better quality opposition and lose: the learning is in the defeat. Learning only makes us improve and improving only makes us better in all aspects of life. There is no point in winning games week in and week out by nine wickets or two hundred runs since this shows two things - the weakness of the opposition and the lesser players not getting a chance in the winning team. The Veda (Hindu Scripture) states “We should first try to acquire 'knowledge' and then work for the betterment of society so that everybody gets benefited.”
A sign of character I must say. To quote Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 - 1962 "People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built."
To quote Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865) "Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing."
