Long Ditton v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 24 Sep 2006 at 12pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 20 runs

Match report So on to the last game of the season. The Phoenix gladiators welcomed this game with open arms as they knew that once this was over they can rest, relax and have a break until next year. Bearing this in mind Phoenix arrived at the beautiful ground of Long Ditton in a jovial mood and high spirits.

Also this Sunday was an auspicious day where three major religions connected - this day the Christians go to church, the Muslims were fasting during Ramadan and the Hindu's were refraining from wine & meat during Navratre. So on this note a perfect day to end the season with.

A warm and sunny day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss Jason had no hesitation in asking the opposition to bat first.

Mitul and Anup opened the bowling and straight away found a nagging line & length to restrict the Long Ditton batsman. They played & missed and were going at just under three runs per over in the first sixteen overs.

But our Achilles Heal (right foot) off fielding kicked in again as the luckless bowlers saw catch after catch being dropped. In fact a total of seven catches (off the same two batsman) were not taken, who then went on to make eighty (Ormond) and sixty four (Sweeny) as Long Ditton declared at one hundred and eighty nine for three.

As per our first game of the season, we dropped too many chances when we were bowling very well thus allowing the opposing team to score twenty runs too many. All was not lost since with a good batting line-up the target was possible.

Zee and Shiv opened the innings giving foundation an excellent start as they scored fifty three in thirteen overs. At the fall of Zee (who scored an excellent thirty one which included five fours), Shiv and Noman continued the good work and cemented the foundation as they scored fifty two in ten overs. Then two quick wickets fell either side of drinks with Noman getting out for a superb forty four (which included six fours and a six) and Shiv for a hard fought twenty five. Rahul and Mitul further strengthened our position scoring forty one off the next nine overs.

At the thirty fourth over Phoenix were one hundred and forty nine for three, needing only forty one to win off the final ten overs. But our Achilles Heal (left foot) off collapsing kicked in again as we then managed to lose the next seven wickets for only twenty runs in just seven overs.

As per our first game of the season, we threw away our wickets when we had the game at our mercy and from the brink of victory we conceived to lose the game.

Well done to Long Ditton for a splendid game & an exciting/tense finish and above all playing the game in the correct attitude & spirit. Until next year we say goodbye.

As for Phoenix, a loser of a race is not the one that came last or didn't win but the one who never took part. Thus failure is not about losing but about not attempting. To quote Zig Ziglar (American motivational Speaker and Author) - “It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action, and discipline that enabled us to follow through.

A fantastic effort by Phoenix for honouring every game this season by getting a side out and above all playing with a passion, spirit and fun deserved of this game. Bring on 2007.
