Chertsey v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 26 Aug 2007 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 60 runs
Match report
Bourne - is a fictional character in the Bourne Trilogy novels written by Robert Ludlum.
Back to Basics - was an attempt to relaunch the government of British Prime Minister John Major in 1993. Announced at the Party Conference of that year, the initiative was intended to focus on issues of law and order, education and public probity after the debacle of Black Wednesday had destroyed the claims of the UK Conservative Party to safeguard public finance.
Sanj continuing his role as stand-in skipper took Jason's Argonauts to hot and sunny lands of Chertsey. A beautiful batting track welcomed both teams and once again on losing the toss, Phoenix were asked to adorn the sun and field first.
Phoenix need to go back to basic as the cricketing fielding basics have been forgotten - the long barrier, putting your body behind the ball, using your hands when fielding, marking the ground so to remember your fielding position, walking in, knowing where to go when there is a right hand left hand combination, catching, backing up a throw, constant awareness in the field, attacking the ball, bowling discipline.
This is summed up as no runs were scored off the bat during Farhan's first four overs but the Chertsey score was still near four runs per over. This due to wides, no balls and sloppiness in the field were singles were taken to fielders preventing the one run, two's made when only a single was permitted and three run's scored when only two was available.
Chertsey final score was one hundred and eighty one off their allotted forty overs with Burton top scoring with sixty eight (he was given a life when he was on twenty eight and the Chertsey score was sixty in the fifteenth over) and the second highest score being extras scoring thirty eight runs.
In the Bourne Trilogy, Jason Bourne being an amnesiac attempts to discover the truth of his identity. In terms of Phoenix, the team need to wake up from their own amnesia and discover the truth of their own cricketing desire and the meaning of the word 'Team'. To quote 'Teamwork means that we share a common ideal and embrace a common goal. Regardless of our differences, we strive shoulder to shoulder, confident in one another's trust and commitment.'
Bearing this in mind, Phoenix were in trouble from the outset as Sanj had to promote Tushar, Amrit, Imran and Kashif into the top five. They battled bravely with Tushar scoring a steady thirty seven (which included four fours), Imran scoring a quick fire seventeen (which included four fours) and Kashif scoring a rapid eighteen (which included four fours). A special mention to both Tushar & Imran for passing the one hundred run mark for the season thus far.
Phoenix continued to haemorrhage wickets as the run rate increased and were finally bowled out sixty runs short of the required target with seven overs left of the innings to go.
Well done to Chertsey for a well deserved victory and being magnificent hosts. As for Phoenix, to quote Lou Holtz (former NCAA football head coach) 'I won't accept anything less than the best a player's capable of doing, and he has the right to expect the best that I can do for him and the team'.
Its easier to be a skeptic than a visionary for its far easier to be critical of an idea instead of being part of a vision.
