Scorecard

Prestcold v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 06 May 2007 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 114 runs

Match report After last weeks batting collapse Jason once again set sail for the trip to Reading and a game versus Prestcold. We beat them last year so we know that a good performance was required for they were looking to avenge their defeat.

Once again a lovely picturesque ground welcomed us and on winning the toss, the opposition captain had no hesitation to bat first. On debut for Phoenix were Atif and Faisal.

Prestcold got off to a good start scoring with ease as their fifty came of just seven overs. Vishal was bought into the attack to stem the run flow and he quickly got Phoenix back into the game. He took a wicket in his first over continued to bowl with great control as he conceded only eight runs in his opening six over spell.

Phoenix once again didn't take their chances as they dropped Hugh King twice. Mr King made Phoenix pay for their mistakes as he went on to make a excellent ninety one and took Prestcold to a final score of two hundred and fourteen.

Phoenix at one stage had clawed themselves back into the game but with them giving away fifty extras and as well as not taking their chances soon found themselves in a tough situation. At tea, they knew that they needed to bat well if they wanted to repeat last year's performance.

Fabian and Shiv opened the batting and put on forty seven for the first wicket when Shiv got a brute of a delivery that popped up on a length as he was caught at gully. Fabian and Nad continued their form with the bat and took Phoenix to sixty six for one off fifteen overs. They made thirty and twenty nine respectively and congratulations to Fabian as he reached a personal milestone of making hundred runs.

After last week's collapse it wasn't thought possible of such an achievement to be mimicked again. Alas the ICC (Inevitable Cricket Collapse) was invoked again as Phoenix went from ninety two for three to one hundred and two all out. Phoenix once again managed to lose their last seven wickets for only ten runs in the space of eight overs.

Duck Hunting Season in the UK normally begins in September but at Phoenix it has come early. Last week we had six ducks and this week we managed to equal this un-envious achievement. That makes twelve ducks in two innings,

But we are in good company, for the following countries have achieved the same feat as us:

Pakistan against England in the 1987 Texaco Trophy
Pakistan against South Africa in the 1992-1993 Total International Series
South Africa against Australia in the 2001-2002 VB Series

Well done to Prestcold for a convincing win and with the infamous joke of 'we have more ducks than a Chinese restaurant' echoing in our ears, Phoenix need to instil in themselves some pride and belief.

To quote Paul Bryant (American football college Coach. 1913-1983) 'Show class, have pride, and display character. If you do, winning takes care of itself.'

Finally to quote Mahatma Gandhi 'If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.'

Defeat is not the issue but losing with out a fight is a concern. Pride is a personal commitment. It is an attitude which separates excellence from mediocrity. Lets make Phoenix proud and show those that play against us who we really are and what we are really capable off.
