Old Isleworthians & Heston v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 10 Jun 2007 at 2pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Fabian took charge of the Argo and with Jason's Argonauts ventured forward to Wood Lane for the second of our three local derbies (the others being Indian Gymkhana and British Airways) against Old Isleworthians & Heston (OIH). This fixture was Phoenix's first victory so it remains a special day for all concerned.
A hot day welcomed both teams and on wining the toss the opposition skipper asked Phoenix to field first. This was Phoenix's first timed game of the season and Phoenix also welcomed back Jim for his first game of the season.
Phoenix's fast bowling line up was like a children TV's carnival show since we had Pingu (Amrit), Alf (Tushar) and Secret Squirrel (Vishal) all in action. All the bowlers bowled well with good pace, movement and discipline as the OIH were glued to the screen playing and missing more often than not. Luck wasn't going for the bowlers for close LBW appeals were turned down, edges missing the fielders and caught behinds unfortunately not heard by the umpires. Amrit continues to move up the gears has the season progresses and today he had an impressive eight over spell where only twelve runs were conceded of his bowling.
After the first sixteen overs OIH had only made fifty runs without losing a wicket.
Sanj and Nad then came on to bowl their differing variations of spin. Nad continued his majestic form with the ball conceding only twenty three runs of his nine overs and Sanj was once again amongst the wickets as he took his second 'fifer' of the season.
A quick mention to Jim for his wicket keeping as he 'took one for the team' and to Rahul for his brilliant display of fielding as he didn't let once shot pass him.
After two and three quarter hours in the field and with the hot sun belting down all of the players, Phoenix managed to bowl an impressive forty three overs. OIH final score was a gettable one hundred and forty two but on a turning pitch the issue was with the number of overs Phoenix would have to face for this run chase.
After tea it had emerged that Phoenix would get twelve overs before the final twenty overs would start - that meant Phoenix would face only thirty two overs. A good start was needed if victory was to be achieved.
Alas this was not to be as Phoenix lost five of their top six batsman for only thirty runs with only nineteen overs left to play. Jim and Indi then settled the ship with a gritty and resilient display as they scored forty nine runs in the next ten overs. Jim, showing his class and unnerving temperament, scored an excellent twenty seven with some brilliant stroke play and Indi found his touch with a hard fought twenty three. The run chase was all but over when Indi got out with Tushar coming in to see out the next seven overs for a draw. Phoenix's score at close of play was ninety three for six.
Well done to Old Isleworthians & Heston for a great game and unlucky Phoenix for if we had another six overs or so then the draw would have become a victory. Phoenix still remain undefeated in this fixture.
To quote Richard M. DeVos (co-founder of the Amway Corporation) 'Few things in the world are more powerful than a positive push. A smile. A word of optimism and hope. A "you can do it" when things are tough'.
