Byfleet v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 15 Jul 2007 at 1.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 3 Runs

Match report Hurricane Fabian, 27 August - 8 September 2003 : Fabian was a long-lived, powerful Cape Verde hurricane that struck Bermuda with category three intensity. It caused extensive damage on that island, where it was reported to be the worst hurricane since 1926.

Grizzly - a large and ferocious bear (Ursus horribilis) of Western North America and the Rocky Mountains. It is remarkable for the great length of its claws.

Mihos - In Egyptology was the lion god and son of Bastet (Cat Goddess), the guardian of sacred places and an aggressor who attacks and mauls a captive enemy.

After last weeks result, Phoenix went to the green fields and trees of Byfleet in jubilant spirits. Today was the last chance for Phoenix's most powerful elite force to prepare and be battle ready before their arduous journey down south to engage their opposition to cricketing bouts, drinking contests and other such fun filled festivities. Phoenix has both a logical and passionate side to its nature. This combined strength makes Phoenix fear no team. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Suffer we all did in the humidity of the day. Thus having won the toss the skipper Fabian had no hesitation in electing to bat.

Fabian and Jim opened the innings and soon Byfleet knew that they had a game on their hands. The unexpected and unprepared Byfleet then witnessed its own hurricane as Fabian, a man who has the balance, poise & agility like a feline and used two of his nine lives played exquisitely for his century with strokes of raw power, impeccable timing and delightful precision. His runs came at a quick rate producing a vast array of shots with the ball racing to the boundary on all parts of the ground. A majestic & masterful display - incredibly he hit nine fours and eight sixes.

One can not say this was a pussycat performance but can compare it to that of a lion. The Pharaohs may have had Mihos but Phoenix has it own Lion King - Fabian 'Simba' Saverimuttu.

Fabian in his run fest was assisted ably by Jim who shared a stand of seventy one runs in twelve overs and with Nad who shared a stand of one hundred and eight of thirteen overs. Fabian then retired hurt in the twenty fifth over but the foundation was laid for a huge score. All the top six batsman got into double figures with Imran blasting a quick twenty seven which helped Phoenix post a final score of two hundred and fifty one off their allotted forty overs. In which the team hit twenty eight fours and nine sixes.

Applauds to both Fabian & Nad who passed two hundred runs for the season so far.

At tea, Phoenix just had to keep the fielding tight in order to win.

Byfleet went out all guns blazing and were scoring at eight runs an over initially. Sanj & Nad soon came on to stem the flow of runs and quickly found their line & length. In a match where five hundred runs were scored their sixteen overs went for a miserly sixty four runs.

Wickets were key and Tushar was given the onerous task to make the break through. Tush being one of the youngest member of Phoenix has been like a teddy bear all season - always being soft, gentle and friendly to the opposition. But today was when he threw away this unwanted mantle and became a grizzly with some aggressive bowling taking three scalps that turned the game into Phoenix's favour.

Three Byfleet batsman made fifty and put pressure on the Phoenix's fielding and soon started to make in-roads in the run chase. The pressure took hold and mistakes were being made were singles were taken when there wasn’t a single to be taken, balls going thru legs for fours, dropped catches, over throws, missed run outs - is there anything I haven't mentioned?

The game was won & lost in the final five overs with Byfleet needing at this point forty four to win with eight wickets in hand with two batsman both on fifty runs. Byfleet were in the hot seats as they have been scoring nine runs an over in the previous 7 overs.

Over number thirty six - Byfleet needed forty four runs to win. Tush bowled conceding fourteen runs and taking the wicket of Shette who had scored fifty.

Over number thirty seven - Byfleet needed thirty runs to win. Fabian bowled conceding only six runs and taking the wicket of Anwar who had scored fifty. Rahul taking a stunning diving catch and Indi pulling off a brilliant stop on the point boundary saving two runs. Great work on the boundary by Shiv whose quick work made Byfleet take a single when two runs were there for the taking.

Over number thirty eight - Byfleet needed twenty four runs to win. Tushar bowled fantastically conceding only two runs and taking the wicket of Pullen. Sanj taking a pressurised skier of a catch and Indi brilliantly running out Milroy. Great work on the boundary by Amrit whose quick work made Byfleet take a single when two runs were there for the taking.

Over number thirty nine - Byfleet needed twenty two runs to win. Fabian bowled. Rodwell hit one four and then a huge six. His third attempt was taken magnificently as Faizan ran around and took the catch at the deep extra cover boundary.

Over number forty - Final over and Byfleet needed ten runs to win. Tush bowled beautifully. Three dot balls and then Byfleet hit a single. Three balls and eight runs to win. Next ball a dot ball. Two balls and eight runs to win. Ronnie the fifteen year old then walked down the pitch and hit the ball straight to midwicket. Nad misjudged the flight and as he ran in to catch the ball, the ball went over him for four. Final ball and Byfleet need a boundary to win. Ronnie once again walked down the pitch but missed. They went on to run a single but victory was Phoenix by three runs.

An excellent game that had everything from greatness to desperation to anxiety. An excellent win for Phoenix but a special mention to Byfleet who played the game as it should be played with spirit, passion and fun banter. A great day for cricket regardless if one was on the losing or winning team.

Also another special thanks to Zee who umpired both ends of both innings and did a wonderful job. The opposition thought that was one of the most fairest umpiring they have witnessed so all credit to Zee.

Previously it has been mentioned that we should take responsibility (the social force that binds you to your obligations and the courses of action demanded by that force: "we must instill a sense of duty in our cricketers"). After this display we became accountable (Liable to being called to account; answerable for our actions).

MajQa' Phoenix as the Klingons would say (which means well done).
