Dartington & Totnes v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Thu 19 Jul 2007 at 5.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
Match report
An Affair to Remember is a 1957 by Leo McCarey directed film, starring actors in leading roles Cary Grant & Deborah Kerr.
So on to the first game of the tour. A lovely picturesque ground on a wet & damp afternoon welcomed both teams for this short twenty five over per side affair. On winning the toss the stand-in skipper Nad elected to put the opposition into bat first.
The Phoenix bowlers came out and bowled with both discipline & aggression and they were ably supported by all the fielders who dived and slid to stop the balls to prevent any extra runs. With the Phoenix players on their game, Dartington & Totnes (D&T) found it hard to score in this quick fire version of the game. After twelve overs D&T were fifty for three. In came their overseas South African player Loots who then took control with a barrage of boundaries. He scored an excellent eighty five as he led D&T to a final score of one hundred and seventy one off their allotted twenty five overs.
Phoenix came out to bat and lost Darius very early. Zee and Rahul then consolidated and made a sixty nine run partnership in the next fifteen overs when Zee was bowled for a well made twenty one in the fifteenth over. Phoenix need one hundred and three runs on the next ten.
But this was to be an affair to remember being directed by Nad and the actors in the leading role were Rahul and Fabian in this Phoenix remake.
Rahul kept up the tempo in difficult conditions as he reached his maiden fifty with some brilliant batting. The boundary wasn’t big enough as he easily found the gaps and was finally out for a superb fifty seven which included seven fours and two sixes. To quote John Steinbeck ((American Novelist and Writer, Nobel Prize for Literature for 1962, 1902-1968) 'A boy becomes a man when a man is needed'. A special mention to Rahul who passed one hundred runs for the season.
At the loss of Rahul & Jim, Fabian and Nad needed sixty runs in the final six overs to win the game. Fabian with his sumptuous form continued were Rahul had left off hitting the boundaries with ease and ending up with an excellent forty which included six fours and a six.
Nad kept the scoreboard ticking with sublime placement and running and eventually hit the winning boundary as Phoenix came home with a ball to spare. Nad was undefeated on a well made twenty six.
Well done to Dartington & Totnes for a fabulous game of cricket which went done to the wire.
Phoenix Cricket Club seeks to redefine the common cricketing experience, and elevate the fun to a status not usually enjoyed and achieved by other teams. The game comprises of Cricket Played as it should be, with robust fielding , glorious wicket taking and evocative boundaries. The players enjoyed an amalgam of exciting cricket specially blended with skill, guile and sportsmanship. This type of Fusion cricket with spirit, desire and unity is integral to Phoenix's performance. Once again the opposing team were not let down.
