North Maidenhead v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 15 Jun 2008 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 12 runs
Match report
The Exodus (God's call to the people of Israel to get up and leave their position of slavery in Egypt) occurred in the third year of the reign of the pharaoh Amenhotep II. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts also stand up and be counted when the call of duty in terms of contribution comes a calling.
A sunny day welcomed both teams and in the absence of the Saverimuttu Brother's Sanj took charge of the Red Caps. The opposition captain won the toss and no hesitation to bat first.
Farhan and Ali opened the bowling and soon enough continued the form they have been showing all season. Farhan made the first break through as Rahul took a stunning catch as he covered lots of ground accumulating in a dive to remove the captain in the cover region. Phoenix fielding and bowling was on top for most of the match as all the bowlers took wickets and all catches held. In fact Phoenix took five catches and had a run out.
Phoenix had restricted North Maidenhead to just one hundred and two for seven off thirty overs. Phoenix then lost their fielding discipline and were making basic mistakes as the final ten overs saw the North Maidenhead batsman take charge. With the help of Faisal they scored seventy four runs with Faisal finishing on a well made forty one. At tea, North Maidenhead scored one hundred and seventy six and Phoenix knew they needed to get a good start and bat well if they wanted to make it three wins in a row.
Tush, Zee and Rahul gave Phoenix a good foundation as they all made it to double figures but couldn’t up the scoring. Imran and Nad then after a quiet period assessing the bowling began to break free of their shackles. Imran played with a calming defence as he rotated the strike to allow Nad to do his thing. Nad was playing beautifully as he took quick singles and punished both good & ball deliveries. They broke the Highest Fourth Wicket partnership as they scored eighty nine runs in just ten overs.
Infact when they made their fifty run partnership Imran had only scored one which showed his character as knew what was expected of him. Imran was finally out for a hard fought seventeen and Nad made an impressive seventy (which included ten fours and six). Before they were out Phoenix were one hundred and forty for the loss of three wickets in the twenty fifth over. The victory target was just thirty seven runs off fifteen overs with seven wickets in hand.
I don't know when it will be. But I know it is coming. You see, it's always the same. There's no stopping what can't be stopped. I can feel it all around. You can't see the eyes of the demon collapse until him come calling. This is dread, man. Truly dread. Nothing else for you here. Time to go. Prepare yourself.
The dormant demon that always lie within this side showed its head as the ICC took hold (Infamous Cricket Collapse) as Phoenix managed to lose seven wickets in the next seven overs for just twenty four runs as they were bowled out twelve runs short of the victory target.
This debacle can be summed up by a quote from Albert Einstein (German born American Physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity. Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921. 1879-1955) “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
Nad batted with consummate ease as he once again took Phoenix to the brink of victory and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Nad for passing two hundred runs and to Farhan for passing ten wickets for the season thus far.
Well done to North Maidenhead for an exciting game who never gave up to produce an unlikely win. As for Phoenix another game that we have thrown away when victory was in our grasp. Remember, people will judge you by your actions, not your intentions. So to quote Napoleon Bonaparte “Take time to deliberate; but when the time for action arrives, stop thinking and go in.”
And finally to quote Leonardo da Vinci (Italian draftsman, Painter, Sculptor, Architect and Engineer whose genius epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. 1452-1519) “I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.”
