O.C.Traditionalists v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 01 Jun 2008 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 37 runs
Match report
Then it came to pass, at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh had a dream; and behold, he stood by the river. Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts realise their own dreams and win their first game of the season.
Set against the majesty of the Totteridge Plains and to the evocative rhythms of North London, Cranford’s multi-award winning musical 'The Phoenix' will redefine your expectations of cricketing theatre.
Fabian led the red caps on the what is now the accustomed mission full of obstacles to North London for one of the most look forwarded games of the season, the match versus O.C.Traditionalists (OCT). A friendship and rivalry that has now been cemented with a competitive spirit, good nature and friendly banter.
The Phoenix Mars Mission has a collaborative approach to space exploration. As the very first of NASA's Mars Scout class, Phoenix combines legacy and innovation in a framework of a true partnership: government, academia, and industry.
The Phoenix OCT Mission also has a collaborative approach to cricketing exploration. As the very first of Phoenix's cricketing class, Phoenix combines cricketers from the 'Beefy & Kapil' old days with the young guns of today's twenty twenty era in a framework of a true partnership: committee, nets and availability.
The Phoenix had landed and it was time to do what it has been threatening to do all season and win a game. An overcast day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss the OCT captain had no hesitation to ask Phoenix to make first use of the wicket. This was the first time this season in which Phoenix was batting first.
Fabian and Tushar opened the innings and soon after Tushar walked when he got the slightest of edges to the resounding thanks of the OCT fielders. A tough wicket to batman meant that the Phoenix batsman need to bat with discipline and this is what Fabian and Noman did. They kept the tempo running with quick singles and elegant stroke play as they made a fifty partnership in twelve overs.
Phoenix at this looked at ease. Then a tired looking shot got Noman's wicket has he was out for a hard fought twenty six and then disaster struck as Phoenix slumped from fifty seven for one in the fifteenth over to sixty one for five in the nineteenth over.
Faizan came to the middle to join Fabian and soon regained control back into Phoenix's favour with both disciplined aggressive and defensive displays. Fabian soon got settled into his rhythm and began to make the bowlers pay severely for any loose deliveries with Faizan on the other side quietly making his runs in singles and two's. They broke the Highest Sixth Wicket partnership as they scored eighty two runs in thirteen overs.
Fabian was finally out for a blistering eighty two (which included eight fours) and Faizan for an excellently made thirty one. A special mention to Fabian passing two hundred runs for the season thus far.
The tail wagged and the final four batsman added thirty two in the final five overs with Phoenix ending on a competitive one hundred and seventy six. Phoenix were in the driving seat at tea and the key to gaining victory was getting O'Mara and Ronnie out cheaply.
Faizan and Farhan opened the bowling and soon controlled their pace and length to take advantage of the overcast conditions. They made the ball swing in both directions as the OCT openers struggled to make runs.
Farhan was in a swinging mood as he controlled the ball at will and with the extra pace had the top three batsman out bowled or LBW in no time. Farhan finished his spell with Yazdan taking a simple catch at square leg and ended up with four wicket at a cost of twenty runs.
OCT were struggling but still in with a shout as O'Mara came to the wicket. O'Mara played aggressively of the first two balls he faced from Sanj but then Sanj bowled a beauty of a delivery as took O'Mara's edge which Tushar took excellently behind the stumps. The Monty Panesar reaction and the group huddle celebration was in full flow as Phoenix came ever close to victory.
The run rate had climbed as Nad and Fabian contained the batting and soon made inroads as the OCT batsman had to hit out in order to win the game. Ali contained the ever dangerous Ronnie who was eventually run out for fifty six after a great piece of fielding by Nad.
At the end the oldest and youngest of Phoenix came together with Cyrus bowling his slow left arm turners to the sheer delight of all the fielders and with Vishal finally wrapping up the win as he took the OCT's captain's wicket with his very first ball for Phoenix.
A sublime end to a brilliant performance with everyone contributing as Phoenix rose to its first elusive victory of the season and the flaming bird is now ready to conquer new missions.
Farhan bowled with sheer class and swing as he took out the OCT top order and for this reason he is named Man of the Match.
A spectacular visual feast unfolded, as this adaptation of Cranford’s much-loved spectacle transported audiences to a dazzling world that exploded with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music. At its heart is the powerful and moving story of a team who on this epic adventure became the Kings of the Pridelands.
A great day of cricket for all and a massive thank you to OCT for being magnificent hosts. As for Phoenix, onwards and upwards - You won't realise the distance you've walked until you take a look around and realise how far you've been. To quote Dr. Martin Luther King Jr "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step".
