Teddington Town v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 29 Jun 2008 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 91 runs
Match report
In the third year of the reign of Xerxes, King of Persia, a huge feast in Susa was held and then an assembly to arrange the Grecian war. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts feast upon their leader's energy and lay a banquet of cricketing excellence for all to feast upon.
With Jason back at the helm of the Argos, the red caps made the short trip to Bushy Park for a game against Teddington Town . The entrance to the ground is via Chestnut Avenue. This mile long avenue was conceived by Sir Christopher Wren as a formal approach to Hampton Court Palace in the reign of William III & Mary II. Flanked on both sides by a single row of horse chestnuts and four rows of limes, it marks the Park's zenith in terms of royal ambitions and sophistication. The view from Teddington Gate provides the most striking view of the Avenue, with the Arethusa 'Diana' Fountain and the Banqueting Hall as the backdrop.
Alas to the cricket. A warm but cloudy day welcomed both teams and on losing the toss Phoenix were asked to bat first. Phoenix eyes lit up as they relished the challenge on what looked like another perfect batting track with a quick outfield.
Fabian and Zee opened the innings for Phoenix and Fabian showed his intent in the very first over has he hit three fours on what were good deliveries. What then unfolded was no less than carnage as the Phoenix batsman began to express themselves like Madonna songs "express yourself, you've got to make him, express himself, hey, hey, hey, hey".
Phoenix amassed a massive two hundred and thirty one runs off their allotted forty overs with Fabian being brutal as ever scoring an excellent forty four (which included nine fours) as he lay the foundation, Shaunak showing his class scoring a sublime seventy two (which included nine fours and two sixes) in the middle of the innings to set up the finale and Nad being clinical as ever scoring a superb forty eight (which included five fours) in final onslaught.
At tea, Phoenix just needed to bowl and field as they been doing all season to win the game.
Phoenix came out to field with a bit more food & drink in their bellies as they treated themselves to a good tea knowing they had a good score they could defend. And defend they did easily.
Anup was the pick of the bowlers as he bowled with excellent control and took the three and four number batsmen to expose the Teddington Towns middle order. All the bowlers bowled well picking up wickets on a regular basis with Zee came in mopping up as he took three wickets, all the catches taken with ease and the ground work was impeccable bar the few odd mistakes.
Shuanak held the innings together at the crucial time as he best used the start that was given so to help set a target for the team to reach and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Fabian and Nad for passing three hundred runs and to Sanj for passing twenty wickets for the season thus far.
Well done to Teddington Town for great game and fun day out for all. As for Phoenix, what more can one say then well done for a professional job. To quote Larry Bird (legendary Basketball player) "“A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals."
