Windsor v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 11 May 2008 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 13 runs

Match report In the third year of the reign of Ramesses the Great, he started the most ambitious building project after the pyramids, his memorial temple Ramesseum. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts build on their performances thus far and achieve that elusive win.

Jason was back at the helm of the ship and led the Phoenix side to the lush greenery of Windsor's home park. As well as a scorchingly hot day the Horse Tattoo welcomed both sides and as per usual everyone was thinking if the Queen was peering out of a window of Windsor Castle sneaking a quick look at what was being presented in front of her.

Fabian was back from his trip to the far east and like a returning of the jedi he bring his new found wisdom and zen to the side. Like the Galactic Empire, He & Phoenix have been working on the construction of a new weapon which is to be even larger and more powerful than the first Death Star.

Having won the toss Windsor's skipper had no hesitation in asking the Phoenix players to enjoy a little run around and sun bathing in the field first. A lovely batting track was on offer with a very quick outfield so Phoenix needed to bowl and field well if they wanted a chance of winning the game.

Windsor had a good side out and soon the second eleven players as well as the sun took toil on Phoenix. Ali and Rowdy opened the bowling without success and every loose delivery was dispatched to the boundary with consummate ease. The boundaries were flowing and Windsor were cruising at six runs per over - a score of well over two hundred was on the cards.

Jason acted quickly and slowed the game down. Anup came on with his niggling line & length, Nad with his left arm variations and Sanj with his guile helped restrict the Windsor batsman as they instantly curtailed any loose deliveries. The fielders did their part as some sharp catching from Fabian, Varun, Ali and Nad as well as a excellent stumping from Noman help put the pressure on. At the end of their allotted forty overs, Phoenix successfully restricted Windsor to one hundred and seventy seven for eight.

At Tea, Phoenix knew they had to bat well if they wanted to win. The Saverimuttu Brother's opened the innings and gave Phoenix the perfect start. Fabian unleashed his power and Jason showed why he is the legend he is as the 'Saverimuttu Drive' was made famous again. Jason made an elegant nineteen and was the bedrock of foundation as Fabian demolished the Windsor attack as he butchered his way to a brilliant fifty (which included nine fours and a six) of only fourteen scoring shots.

After ten overs, Phoenix were seventy five for one. Then the ICC (Infamous Cricket Collapse) gave a call and Phoenix responded as they lost six wickets in six overs for twenty five runs which included two golden ducks. So far this season, it can be said we have more ducks than a chinese restaurant.

At one hundred for eight Nad and Anup had a battle on their hands. With plenty of overs to go, it was pride to play for first. They both batted well with share grit and determination. The defence was used more often than not but that didn’t stop them hitting the bad balls to the boundary.

Nad was looking comfortable at twenty four when he made a mistake and Phoenix were still fifty six runs from victory. Ali came in and supported Anup with the same determination and slowly clawed Phoenix back into the game. Ali then made a mistake as he too was looking comfortable and at this point Phoenix needed twenty four to win.

Sanj strode out with a purpose and had to stay in so to allow Anup any chance of winning the game. Anup battled to the very end and was out on a superbly made twenty four (which included three fours) as Phoenix fell thirteen runs short of the winning target. A mention to Harris who bowled exceptionally well and finished with figures of eight overs two maiden four wickets for eighteen runs.

Anup bravely faced eighteen overs defending and nurdling in which he showed his temperament. He allowed Phoenix to hold their heads up high as he made Windsor face defeat and for this reason he is named Man of the Match.

A great game played in a terrific environment so hats off to Windsor. As for Phoenix, we showed that we are a team who fights for each other until the very end. To quote Ryunosuke Satoro (writer & poet) "Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.”

To end, during the Return of the Jedi, Yoda informs Luke that "there is another Skywalker". A kin to that, Jason then tells the team, that apart from Fabian "there is another Saverimuttu". Bring forth Cyrus.
