Godalming v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 02 Aug 2015 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 9 wickets
Match report
Beat Godalming by 9 wickets. The sun was shining, the pitch looked beautiful, 2 new balls, 22 rearing to go players & the fans watching with drinks in their hands - the perfect way to play the game. Sanjeev lost yet another toss and Godalming decided to bat first. Rowdy & Sakhil opened the bowling and soon enough their pace & discipline gave Phoenix the upper hand in the early exchanges with Sakhil at his prime has his first 5 overs only went for 4 runs plus he took a wicket. Sanjeev loves bowling at Godalming and was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 24 in his spell, he even took a wonderful caught & bowled. The fielding thru out was top draw with Prince taking his 11th stumping, Babbu & Mannu holding onto their catches which makes it 8 & 7 respectively thus far and Vishal closed the innings with a direct throw run out.
At tea, Phoenix needed 179 for victory. Prince & Sethi negotiated the new ball as the Godalming openers came producing some brilliant bowling as they swung the ball both ways with pace & on the perfect line/length. We lost Sethi when the score was 28 but then it was all Phoenix. Prince & Jay put on 154 for the 2nd wicket as they cruised home to victory in just 27.3 overs. Prince played the 'solid as a rock' role scoring 60 off 104 balls which included 8 fours which gave Jay the perfect mantle to show his skills. Jay didn’t disappoint has he hit 103 of just 49 balls which included 15 fours & 4 sixes, in-between his power & brutality he played a few quite exquisite cricket shots that even the perfectionist Kully would have been proud off.
So in the pavilion as the beers flowed in good measure, some people were engrossed in deep conversations of stories of yester-year and some people were captivated by the wondrous world of new technology in the form of the 'selfie stick'. Sounds refreshed the vibe as the clink of glasses in salutation as people said 'cheers', the humming & laughter of voices in discussions and the click of cameras taking photographs echoed across. A marvellous place to behold I must say.
So the boy get emotional and start to sing a "Wonderful Tonight", a song by Eric Clapton from the 1977 Album called Slowhand.
"It's late in the evening, she's wondering what clothes to wear.
She puts on her make-up and brushes her long blond hair.
And then she asks me, "Do i look all right?"
And I say, "Yes, you look wonderful tonight."
