GSK v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Thu 30 Jul 2015 at 6pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
Match report
Beat GSK by 6 wickets. So another local derby against the GSK boys who are just down the A4 in Brentford bit this time a 2020 game with slightly new rules. On winning the toss, the GSK had no hesitation to bat first and from experience of their previous encounter, Sanj had Backward Point, Gully, Fly Slip & Third Man at the ready. The GSK innings was steady but didn’t really pick up pace as they scored at relative ease at about 8 runs per over. Phoenix's bowling was erratic & undisciplined at times were a good over was followed up with a not so good over, be it for the fielding GSK would have posted a bigger score. Vishal & Babbu were electric in the field with some amazing at time stunning diving stops to prevent the ball going to the boundary. The commitment was there to be seen.
GSK closed their innings at 164 off their 20 overs. A score with par to the wicket but Phoenix gave away 30 extras and 22 of them legside wides.
Phoenix knew that wicket was keeping low but with a fast outfield the run chase was a distinct possibility. Raman gave us the perfect start has he smashed 45 off just 23 balls that included 4 fours & 3 sixes, it was shame he had to retire since we was looking good for a big score. Prince, Sethi, Vishal all went for their shots and the plan was to score over a run a ball to maintain the charge and in doing so they ended up sacrificing their wickets. Ali was batting solidly and was allowing everyone to score freely as he held the middle order together. Phoenix were 100 for 3 after 13 overs.
The turning point of the run chase was in two parts. Firstly Babbu ran like a suicidal ferret as he scampered making one into twos and twos into threes. Babbu & Ali made 28 in 3 overs giving the innings the acceleration it needed. Secondly Sakhil came in and blasted 20 off just 8 balls which included 1 four & 2 sixes. As the winning runs were scored in the 19th over, Ali was undefeated on 40 off just 25 balls which included 4 fours and a six. Ali form has been inspired and in two consecutive games has kept calm and taken us home to victory.
With cheers and handshakes at the end, it seems customary that good cricket is followed by pizza & drinks. The only thing was missing was a Bollywood film and a hit masala 'item song' that boys would be dancing & whistling to.
