Match report
In the third year of the reign of Cyrus king of Persia, a message was revealed to Daniel (who had been renamed Belteshazzar). The message was true. It was about a great war. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts with their own Cyrus in the squad do battle against a strong Great Western Railways side.
Jason led his Argonauts to the short trip to the Trailfinders Sport Club in the not to far area of Ealing. A beautiful and warm afternoon welcomed both team for this Twenty Twenty encounter.
Great Western Railways (GWR) won the toss and predictably elected to bat first. Fabian was the skipper for this fixture and he rallied the red caps to action but Phoenix didn’t have a great start as the first ball of the innings was a high and mighty six straight over the bowler's head. Amrit and Sanj were the pick of the bowlers as they bowled with good discpline at a time when the batsmen were hitting even the good deliveries to the boundary.
A few dropped catches and concentation lapses on the field didn’t help matters as GWR piled on the runs. At the end of their innings, GWR amassed a mammoth one hundred and eighty one runs for the loss of five wickets. A mention to Jeff, an Aussie if that helps, who retired after making an excellant fifty.
After the short break, Phoenix came out all guns blazing. The year is 1943, and 2000 British soldiers are holed up on the island of Kheros in the Aegean near Turkey. Rescue by the Royal Navy is impossible because of massive guns on the nearby island of Navarone. Time is short, because the Germans are expected to launch an assault on the British forces, to draw Turkey into the war on the Axis' side.
In the year 2008, 11 Phoenix batsmen are holed up in the pavilion of GWR in Ealing. The target seems impossible and time is short but can the Guns of Cranford launch an assault on the GWR bowling to draw Phoenix to victory.
Fabian led the charge and continued his blistering form from Sunday and with Zee took the attack to GWR. Fabian being brutal as ever hit six fours and a six as he took Phoenix past the fifty mark in just the sixth over. Fabian was finally out as he tried to maintain the required rate of nine runs per over and at the half way point Phoenix had reached seventy four for the loss of two wickets.
Zee continued to fight hard by rotating the strike as much as he could and hitting the loose balls to the boundary rope. He made a splendid fifty (which included four fours) but the big guns of cranford on the other side failed to fire. Soon after, the firing was over and the biggest cheer of the day came when big brother Cyrus Saverimuttu came out to bat.
Zee opened the innings and was eventually out in the seventeenth over after providing the rock solid support for the big hitters to make their mark and for this reason he is named Man of the Match.
Well done to GWR for a excellent allround performance and as for Phoenix they just ran out of steam. To quote Denis Waitley quotes (American motivational Speaker and Author of self-help books. b.1933) "Success is almost totally dependent upon drive and persistence. The extra energy required to make another effort or try another approach is the secret of winning.”
