Crowhurst v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Fri 18 Jul 2008 at 2.30pm

Match report
In this year, Saudi Arabia marks the third anniversary of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah’s ascending to the throne after the death of King Fahd. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts ascend from defeat and produce a performance of recognition, spirit and above all gamesmanship.
The Battle of the Birds is a Scottish fairy tale collected by John Francis Campbell in his Popular Tales of the West Highlands. He recorded it from a fisherman near Inverary, John Mackenzie. Joseph Jacobs took it from there for his Celtic Fairy Tales. In that addition it was the Wren and the Raven, in today's game it was between the Crow and the Phoenix.
Fabian led the Red Caps on another cloudy day to the picturesque ground of Crowhurst. A sporting gesture by the opposition skipper who invited Phoenix to bat first.
Phoenix made the most of the opportunity as they scored one hundred and sixty six on a track with had variable bounce with some deliveries whistling past the nose from a good length and some short deliveries skittling past the feet. Fabian continued his form with a swashbuckling thirty seven (which included four fours and two sixes) and Tushar showed his maturity as he scored a sublime forty one (which included seven fours). No ducks were recorded and oddly enough the top score for Phoenix was extras on forty nine.
At tea, Phoenix needed to do what they are best at and that is bowl is they didn’t want to lose the match.
Farhan and Vishal opened the bowling with pace and movement and soon enough had the Crowhurst batsman in trouble. The produced a magical spell and Crowhurst were in tatters as they slumped to thirty four for six off fourteen overs. Sanj came on an instantly made an impact and it was uphill for Crowhurst as they were on thirty nine for seven off sixteen overs.
Fabian at this point showed his true nature and decided not to bowl our premier bowlers. To everyone's delight and especially the batsman both Imran and Shiv dabbled their arm in what could be called slow dibbly dobblers.
The Crowhurst readily accepted the challenge and in the fading light and reducing overs all results were possible. With only twelve overs to go the breakthrough came as the youngster Woodhams was out for a hard fought thirty five but could Phoenix manage to get the final two wickets. With two overs to go, Farhan zoomed in and with a beauty took the leg stump of Berwick for an excellent thirty. Crowhurst had two overs to bat for the draw.
With everyone around the bat, the cries of ooh's and ahh's were bellowed out at each and every ball as the batsman either played & missed or the ball falling just short of the close in catchers. With the fading light and the last ball glanced away for a single, the game ended a draw. Everyone shook hands and the appreciation of Fabian's generosity was not lost on both sides. The wigging rights went to Vishal who misfielded whilst having the wig on.
Tushar batted with an improved performance as he held the innings together and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Fabian for passing five hundred and to Farhan for passing twenty wickets for the season thus far.
Well done to Crowhurst for a great hospitality and producing an exciting finish. As for Phoenix, they showed spirit when it counted and made a statement to all that cricket is about fun and allowing others to enjoy rather winning at all cost.
To quote JFK (American 35th US President 1961-63) "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
