Marlow Park v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 28 Aug 2016 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 3 wickets
Match report
Beat Marlow Park by 3 wickets. The rain was threatening in-between the glimpses of sun as the clouds slowly coveted the afternoon sky. Sanjeev Kumar returning from injury due to the unavailability of Farhan Nabeel and was asked to field first after losing the toss.
The opening batsman hit a few in the middle of his bat and Sanj chirped from slip 'we know you have a middle now show us your edge' and next ball dutifully the batsman nicked one to be caught behind. Marlow Park then began to hit any loose ball to the boundary and at one point we're going at above 8 an over. We didn't help the cause as our fielding let us down with four missed opportunities to get the batsmen out. Then the spin twins BaBa Bunty Tejvir & Vikas Haripuriya came into their own. Vikas took 4 wickets with Harman, Babbu & Sanj (he was at first slip) taking his catches. Bunty was the key bowler as he stemmed the run rate as his first three overs went for just the one run.
In fact he bowled just two bad balls, which went for six & four, in the forty eight balls he bowled. His figures were 8 overs 3 maidens 3 wickets for 20 runs, a brilliant spell of bowling.
At tea we needed 153 to win as we dragged ourselves back into the match, in the end we took 6 catches.
We got off to a fantastic start firstly by Jay Dhillon, who produced the shot of the day with a six over extra cover, and then a flourish of boundaries by Sethi Singh to get us to 57 for 2 after 8 overs. Prince Kairon & Baljit Suman then batted flawlessly keeping up a good tempo as they put on 68 before Babbu fell for a solid 29. Then the fragility of the
Phoenix nerves came to the fore as over confidence grew since we needed just 28 runs to win with plenty of overs left in the game. We managed to lose 5 wickets for just 22 runs as we slumped from 125-2 to 148-7. The crucial wicket was that of Prince who looked so steady & confident in his play as left a ball that pitched outside the off stump but turned to bowl him. Always a risky shot to an off-spinner especially as 12 wickets fell to spin in the day's play. Nevertheless Prince made an excellent 57 which included 7 fours.
Nervous moments for all as we didn't want to be at the opposite end to the one run victory we had a few weeks back. Marlow Park were homing on the win and we just had to bat sensibly. Bunty batted with absolute defence but Mannu Singh knew something we didn't know. He had belief in that he won't get out to which he restrained his shot play and with the scores level the ball fell into his zone & he then smashed the winning runs through cover for four.
A brilliant game which had everyone on tender hooks as the nerves & tension took hold of everyone's attention.
