Old Merchant Taylors v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 04 Sep 2016 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 3 wickets
Match report
Beat OMT by 3 wickets. A cloud covered swept ground which I believe is one of the best pitches we play as there is something in for the bowlers & something in for the batsmen. Sanj lost the toss again and the Phoenix were asked to bowl first; Shaun Carter was eagerly awaiting is call up as super substitute.
OMT started off with a flurry of runs as good shots as well as edges found the gaps and raced to the boundary. We never really stemmed the tide of runs as we on too many occasions bowled the wrong length to the wrong batsman. With the runs coming at ease, both Hitesh Pabari & Vikas Haripuriya bowled exceptionally well as there allotted seven over spells both went under four runs per over; not to forget taking a wicket each. Mannu Singh had the pace and BaBa Bunty Tejvir took the prize wicket of the centurion.
At tea, OMT scored 203 off their 35 overs. Note in the last over a misfield cost us 15 runs as they sneaked in a single & then hit two fours & a six of the final 3 balls. Would this prove costly was niggling the skippers mind. Phoenix came out to bat but this time the runs weren't coming as fluently or as easily when the OMT boys were batting. It could be the runs on the board pressure or just bowling a disciplined length or a combination of both. A steady start was made as we coasted along at five runs an over but wickets fell as the boys tried to pick up the scoring with Prince Kairon, Baljit Suman & Vishal Kumar victims of the run chase.
Sethi Singh held the early part of the innings together with an excellent 54 which included 9 fours as he guided us to drinks but soon fell to the second ball after the mini break. The score was at this stage 85 for 2 after 16.2 overs. Harman Johal then led the charge as he took us close to the finishing line. The tumble of wickets added pressure and with 3 overs to go we needed 29 to win.
33 over - Vikas ran with all the energy he had and even found the boundary. 183 on the board.
34 over - a good one for OMT with just 6 runs coming off it. Thus we needed 15 of the last over to win but the good news was Harman was facing. The skipper's thought of the fifteen runs costed by a misfield raced through his mind.
34.1 - Six. Harman flicks a full toss over square leg. 8 to win.
34.2 - Six. Harman pulls through midwicket. 3 to win.
34.3 - Two. Drilled to third man. Scores level.
34.4 - Four. Drive over mid on.
Harman ends the game with 84 not out that included 9 fours & 2 sixes. A truly brilliant knock.
A fantastic game of cricket enjoyed by everyone and above all played in tense but friendly circumstances. Superb effort from the guys.
