Chertsey v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 18 Sep 2016 at 12.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 27 runs
Match report
Lost by 27 runs. The sun was hiding and it was to get dark soon, sounds like a horror novel but then again some of the cricket we played was horrible to say the least. Today was a reversal of the story against Bagshot last week.
Sanjeev Kumar lost the toss and we were asked to the enjoy the conditions & bowl first. Our pacemen Harman Johal, Farhan Nabeel & Mannu Singh soon had Chertsey in trouble at 90 for 4 with 20 overs to go at drinks. We took our foot of the gas but soon enough Chertsey got on top of the game and unexpectedly we were on the back foot. It was a batting track with the ball coming into the bat and with a beautifully fast outfield there were runs a plenty on offer.
Bagshot tucked in but Phoenix had a few flurry of wickets at the end as we restricted the opposition to 240 off their 40 overs. Sanj on his comeback bowled well taking 2 wickets and Mannu as always took 3. At tea, Phoenix needed to bat sensibly and in depth if we wanted to win the game.
We got off to a great start as Jay Dhillon & Jeeta Dhillon smashed 77 off just 10 overs. Jay made 41 off 27 balls which included 4 fours & 2 sixes.
Then at 77 for 1 we lost Sethi Singh first ball which massively dented our hopes on pushing on from a great start we had. Jeeta then batted with maturity and a level head as he made 55 off 57 balls which included 7 fours & 2 sixes.
At drinks we were nervous at 120 for 2 needing 120 to win with 8 wickets in hand. Then we had a panic as we lost Jeeta & Harman in successive overs. BaBa Bunty Tejvir and Haider Ali then steadied the ship as they tried to consolidate & rebuild the innings.
Ali & Bunty delivered hard fought innings where concentration not to give the big heave-ho was paramount in their thoughts. Unluckily they didn't heed to the warnings and fell at very crucial times of the innings. They battled hard taking us past 200 but Ali fell for 37 off 26 balls which included 4 fours & a six whilst Bunty fell for 36 off 41 balls which included 5 fours & a six.
This time the Phoenix tail didn't wag and we fell short of our target with 7 overs to go. A loss of concentration when we were bowling & batting allowed us to let slip if our grip of the game and in turn opening the door to Chertsey for victory.
