Great Western Railway v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Tue 01 Jul 2008 at 6pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 6 runs
Match report
In the third year of his reign, King Ahasueurs made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts unleash their own Power of Persia.
Fabian led the Red Caps to second Twenty20 match versus Great Western Railways (GWR) where the first one was won by GWR quite convincingly.
The Great Western Railway originated from the desire of Bristol merchants to maintain the position of their port as the second port in the country and the chief one for American trade. To note that Isambard Kingdom Brunel was the brilliant engineer who planned the original Great Western routes.
GWR desire to win was evident and Phoenix were soon in trouble as they tumbled along to fifty seven for seven of just eight overs. Could Phoenix do the unimaginable and be bowled out in less than ten overs? Where GWR to maintain their position as second to none.
Fabian Saverimuttu is the brilliant batsman who planned the winning Phoenix route. Locomotives may generate their power from fuel (wood, coal, petroleum or natural gas), or they may take power from an outside source of electricity. It is common to classify locomotives by their source of energy. Phoenix's Locomotive Fabian uses the power of Persia as well as the forces of Jaffna as his source.
The power and forces combined as he made a majestic but destructive century taking Phoenix to one hundred and sixty two off their allotted twenty overs. A mention to Yazdan who was rock solid as he shared a sixty four run partnership when all was seemed lost. Fabian hit an incredible fifteen fours and a six to his century and the pinnacle of the innings as he hit twenty six (one six and five fours) off just one over.
At the half way stage, Phoenix needed to hang on to their chances if they wanted to win as GWR had in their ranks two batsmen who could match Fabian.
Phoenix came out to bowl with pace and fire and soon had GWR in trouble as Fabian took an amazing catch at first slip off Farhan's bowling.
Phoenix kept the bowling tight but Kuypers and Dudgeon kept on finding the boundary as both good and bad deliveries went sailing past. Phoenix knew if they both batted out the innings then GWR would win so the pressure was mounting on the Phoenix bowlers & fielders to get their wickets.
Soon enough Dudgeon gave a chance and was dropped and infact he was dropped another two times more. Phoenix's head went down after seven overs GWR were on seventy runs with nine wickets intact. Sanj then came on to bowl and instantly built the pressure as the GWR batsmen couldn’t put him away.
The runs slowly dried up and then the break through came as first Kuypers went for one shot too many and was caught by Fabian off Shaunak's bowling. Sanj found the perfect line and length and took a further two wickets and the pressure now was building on GWR.
Dudgeon was still there as he made an excellent eighty one but as he tried to maintain the run rate he was bowled by a beauty from Shaunak.
Ali and Farhan finished off their last overs conceding only seven runs each and GWR needed twenty seven to win from the final three overs.
The command went out to all and sundry - on your toes boys and stop the boundaries. The Phoenix were alert and they were on the ball as quick as a flash. The outstanding showcase of their fielding was orchestrated by Rahul as he ran in from deep mid-on picked and threw the ball in one motion over the stumps with Fabian taking off the bails to run out the GWR batsman who was trying to sneak two runs.
The final over was to be bowled by Rahul and sixteen were needed to win. With the pressure on everyone Rahul kept his nerve as he only conceded nine runs and the roar of victory was heard.
Fabian batted with pure class and to score one hundred in twenty overs is an incredible achievement and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Fabian for passing four hundred and to Shaunak for passing one hundred runs for the season thus far.
Well done to GWR for a brilliant game that was played with great spirit even under the extreme moments of pressure. As for Phoenix, what more can be said then truly brilliant.
Team spirit is an emotion glimpsed briefly in the moment of victory. This could be seen as Jason, Zahir an Amrit came to support as well as amongst the players playing.
To quote Daisaku Ikeda (Japanese peace Activist and Buddhist Leader of Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai International, b.1928) “The determination to win is the better part of winning.” and this was the difference today that took Phoenix to victory.
So for the trilogy to be complete, can a final and third game be arranged?
