Farley Hill v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Wed 20 Aug 2008 at 5.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 9 wickets
Match report
In the third year in the reign of King of Judah Rehoboam, Ben Solomon ha-David forsook the law of the Lord, and all Israel with him. In Jason's third year in reign nothing of the sort is envisaged but could Jason's Argonauts continue to live the Phoenix ethos and not give up their continued support and friendship.
Farley Hill was once the site of a Great House built beginning in 1818. During the late 1800's, Thomas Graham Briggs lived the high life there, with large rooms and extravagant dinner parties--a far cry from the squalor where the lower class citizens lived. The building's walls are coral stone and still standing despite several fires and hurricanes that ravished the house.
In the 1950's, Hollywood selected Farley Hill as the site for a movie based on Alex Waugh's Island in the Sun. The crumbling mansion was transformed to a mirage of its former glory. A veranda and new staircase were added, and the workers painted the leaves of nearby bushes brilliant colours to resemble reddish flamboyant and bougainvillea blooms.
Alas the above review is of Farley Hill in Barbados with Sanj leading the Red Caps on a wet & cloudy afternoon for the last twenty twenty encounter of the season to the idyllic setting of Farley Hill in Berkshire.
With rain in the air and the ground surrounded by trees, darkness would fall upon the teams fairly quickly. Thus there were so many options to choose from - bat first on a dry pitch, bat second in fading light, bowl first with overcast conditions or bowl second with a wet ball. Sanj was glad when he lost the toss as the decision was then to be made by the opposition captain who decided to bat first.
Phoenix introduced Rohith & Raja and welcomed back Daya & Saket after a absence to the team with Tushar donning on the gloves as he kept wicket for just his second time.
All the bowlers hit the spot in their very first overs and had the Farley Hill batsmen in trouble from the very off with a combination of speed, swing, seam, length and turn. With all the bowlers taking wickets, the catches being caught and the ground fielding up to its very best Phoenix took hold of the game and dominated the outcome.
Phoenix supported each other with words of encouragement as well as words of advice and no one seemed lost or felt alone in the murky outfield. Farley Hill at the end of their twenty overs had posted ninety three with the loss of nine wickets with twenty three coming from their final two overs.
Phoenix had rushed thru their overs and bowled their allotted set in just one hour and fifteen minutes thus giving enough time to chase down the score before the light starts to fade. Phoenix came out to bat as the rain fell steadily over the ground and they knew they had to score the runs in quick time if they wanted a result.
Daya and Noman batted exquisitely as they made ninety one runs in just eleven overs to give Phoenix victory. Daya played a sublime inning as he made thirty five not out (which included four fours and a six) and Noman continued his form showing glimpses of his class as he made forty three not out (which included five fours and a six).
Sanj's captained well, for every time he made a field change a wicket fell or a change of bowling brought about a wicket, and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Sanj for passing thirty wickets and for Rahul for passing ten catches for the season thus far.
Well done for Farley Hill who made a game of it with all the bad weather around as abandoning the game was the easiest of choices to be made.
As for Phoenix, each player has their own unique identity and thus played the role that was expected of them. This was the difference in winning or losing the game was that everyone made a contribution be it with bat, ball or fielding.
Committing yourself is a way of finding out who you are. A man finds his identity by identifying. To quote Epictetus (Greek Stoic philosopher) "First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do".
