Ashford v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 19 Apr 2009 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 34 runs
Match report
The new season brings new changes and for Phoenix that means a new captain in the form of Fabian. A cloudy day welcomed the first game with Fabian leading his Legionnaires' to the short trip along the A30 to Ashford. Dinesh & Bob were making their Phoenix debut.
With turning up to the game on time and winning the toss seemed like a good auspicious omen for Fabian and Phoenix but this was as good as it got for Phoenix.
Fabian elected to bowl first and make use of the overcast weather but with some wayward bowling and ill-disciplined fielding Ashford built a good score and never really looked back. Fabain must have been pulling his hair out as Groundhog Day was upon him as he witnessed himself living the same day over and over again with the mistakes Phoenix were making both on and off the field.
Only consolation was Sanj who bowled well but the batting day belonged to Ashford as they ended with two hundred and five runs off their alloted forty overs with Chris Evans making a lovely fifty-six. In truth, sloppy fielding cost Phoenix at least thirty runs and would they rue this mishap.
Phoenix came out after to tea to give chase but once again mistakes with the bat were also made as Phoenix slumped to fifty three for six off just fourteen overs. At this point only pride was left to play for so that Phoenix would not embarrass themselves further. Up stepped Shaunak who helped bring back some respectability back to the game and above all to the team.
Firstly Shaunak and Bob made a forty one run partnership off just seven overs giving some hope of putting up a fight. Then Shaunak and Vishal took Phoenix to sight of an imaginable victory as they broke the highest eight wicket partnership as they scored sixty seven off eleven overs.
Alas the Phoenix fight was over as Shaunak was the last person out for a brilliantly made sixty-seven (which included five fours) in the thirty four over - thirty four runs short of the victory target. It could be said that Phoenix paid for the mistakes they made in the field.
Shuanak's batting display under pressure was the highlight of the day and for this reason he is named Man of the Match.
Repeat Performance, film released in 1947 and directed by Alfred L. Werker, is a story of a Broadway star who shoots her murderous husband on New Year's Eve. She flees her apartment and goes to her Producer, John Friday and when she arrives, it is New Year's day, a year earlier. She has been given the chance to live life over and correct the errors of the past.
Phoenix produced their own Repeat Performance today but only to find that the end will be the same although the path will be different - seems nothing has been learnt from yesteryear.
Well done to Ashford who executed their plans as designed and showed the discipline that is required to produce a winning performance. As for Phoenix, to quote Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC) 'We are what we repeatedly do'. Its time for change and time for each of us to own our responsibility collectively in a team.
