Phoenix Cricket Club Won 9 wickets
Match report
W. T. S. Thackara stated his his article "Our Spiritual Home" : 'In a conversation between Socrates and Callicles where the question of the soul's immortality cannot be solved by reasoning alone, Socrates appeals to Callicles' intuition with a 'myth.' "Listen," he says, "to a very pretty tale, which I dare say that you may be disposed to regard as a fable only, but which, as I believe, is a true tale, for I mean to speak the truth" (Gorgias §523). So it is with the story of our spiritual home, the word home implying something about family, our inner parentage, and the nature of our relationships with one another. '
So this is where we start today as Phoenix were led on a very hot day to the Spiritual Home of few of our members (Fabian, Nad, Noman & Zee), Kempton. Fabian in joyous mood took charge of his legion and rallied his troops for what was to be an epic day in the history of Phoenix.
The opposition captain on winning the toss had no hesitation in electing to bat first and that meant Phoenix had to endure the heat of the sun. Furthermore, 'In the Heat of the Sun' is a 1994 Chinese movie directed by Jiang Wen which tells the tale of a teenage boy called Monkey who lives in Beijing during the Cultural Revolution.
Anyway back to the telling tale of the game that was directed out perfectly by Fabian and with his cast producing the perfect show.
Phoenix were not here to monkey around and thus came out to bowl with all guns blazing with Ali making the breakthrough in the very first over of the day. This set the tone and soon enough Kempton were struggling and Phoenix knew the game was all but over especially when their batsman endured Phoenix to some buffet batting to coin a phrase. Maybe Phoenix caferteria bowling was more Le Cordon Bleu (French for "blue ribbon") with all the bowlers making a contribution.
Ali bowled impressively has he conceded only seven runs of his six overs as well as taking three wickets. At tea, Phoenix were chasing one hundred and nine runs for victory on a fabulous batting track and mighty fast outfield.
After seventeen overs, the run chase was over as Phoenix romped to victory with Fabian & Jay scoring one hundred and six runs in just thirteen overs. Fabian held the ship with a solid and quite composed twenty nine (which included four fours) but the day belonged to Jay as he combined power & technique to savagely destroy Kempton's bowling. A brutal and barbaric display produced fourteen fours and three sixes as he went on to score an unbeaten seventy nine. India may have MS Dhoni but Phoenix have JS Dhillon.
Phoenix recorded their first win against the might of Kempton and broke down the previosuly impregnable spiritual home.
Fabian was proud of his troops and maybe this was a birthday present come early. If so, the Phoenix military performed the 'Trooping the Colour' with the Regimental Bands and Corps of Drums of the Irish and Welsh Guards being replaced by the cheers of the team.
Jay produced a match winning batting display plus holding onto two vital catches behind the stumps and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Jay for passing the hundred runs mark for the season thus far.
Well done to Kempton for being great hosts and playing the game in the spirit it should be played in making it a fun day out for all. As for Phoenix, a job well done and the hardwork is beginning to show its fruits. Today was a good day to be a Phoenix Member.
To quote John Fitzgerald Kennedy (American 35th US President (1961-63), 1917-1963) “When asked what I am most proud of, I stick out my chest, hold my head high and state proudly, 'I served in the United States Navy!'”
