Old Isleworthians & Heston v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 07 Jun 2009 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 21 runs
Match report
There has been:
Kane & Lynch: XBox360/PS3 game - A flawed mercenary and a medicated psychopath forced together on a violent and chaotic path seeking redemption and revenge.
Kane & Abel: Book, by Jeffrey Archer, tells the stories of two men born worlds apart whose paths cross. They have nothing in common except the same date of birth (April 18, 1906) and a zeal to succeed in life.
Kane & Undertaker: WWE Wrestlers known as the Brothers of Destruction with moves such as the Last Ride & Tombstone Piledriver being their signature moves.
Why mention the above named people you may be scratching you head in wonderment but there is a reason to this maddening babble. In amongst the assemblage of the Phoenix collective, Jason and Fabian are known as the Brothers of Destruction because of their kinship, persona and presence with Jason synonymous to the Dead Man and Fabian to the Big Red Machine. There the link - brothers duo team with one brother called Kane. I did google 'Jason and Fabian brothers' but all I got back was the Saverimuttu's @ Phoenix. So today saw for the first time this season and not since Hastings last year the Phoenix's Brothers of Destruction actually playing side by side.
Anyway on a cloudy day Fabian led his battle hardy legionnaires to the very short trip along the Bath Road to Old Isleworthians & Heston's ground in Isleworth where Phoenix recorded their first ever victory. Infact this is a fixture that we have not yet lost.
Today's game was no different as we added to the previous two wins and a draw with another close fought win. So onto the story of the game itself since I'm a storyteller and my stories must be told.
So a timed match, an overcast sky and an indifferent looking pitch were the key pointers when the opposition skipper won the toss and not surprisingly elected to bowl first.
Phoenix got off to the worst possible start as Fabian was out in just the second over and soon as a partnership developed we lost a wicket. Tushar & Jason put on twenty-five when Jason lost his wicket when all was looking comfortable and Tushar & Noman put on thirty-one when Noman got out when he was quite settled.
At eighty-nine for five, Phoenix innings was on edge. Tushar and Zee held their composure and began to steady the ship. They batted beautifully as they took the singles and put the bad balls away and in no time at all began to form a partnership. Zee held his end with ease and rotated the strike allowing Tushar the freedom to score the runs.
At Zee's loss, they had put on sixty-five runs in sixteen overs. Tushar was the batsman of the day as he batted for forty-one overs for his hard fought yet elegant eighty-three runs (which included eight fours and a six). He held the innings together and got Phoenix to a winning total of one hundred and seventy nine. Fabian declared after forty one overs and to our credit if Old Isleworthians & Heston batted all their overs then then would have faced fifty overs.
Phoenix just needed an early breakthrough and to keep thier heads if they did not want to lose the game. Anup was the man as he got the breakthrough with a gloved edge for Jason to take a neat chance behind the stumps and Anup once again taking a sharp catch at second slip of Nad's bowling.
Old Isleworthians & Heston were thirty-three for three and Phoenix thought they were coasting. Indeed Phoenix did coast as all of a sudden some indiscpline crept in thier game and at twenty overs left Old Isleworthians & Heston need just over a hundred to win with wickets to spare. They then put Phoenix to the sword as they found the boundaries with ease and regularity but at crucial times they just gave Phoenix a look in with lapses of concentration. First O'Neil tried to play one shot to many and was caught by a stunning catch by Fabian s he took the ball over his shoulder off Zee's bowling and then the ever dangerous skipper Mike got in a muddle as Anup ran him out.
Old Isleworthians & Heston now needed fifty runs with two wickets left and fifteen overs in hand. They kept on scoring heavily and all of a sudden Phoenix went quiet but we knew we were only one wicket away from victory. With nine overs to go and twenty-one runs needed Phoenix conjured their strength and Zee produced the magic touch. In his first over of his second spell he got the final two wickets and the game was all over.
The day June 7th echoes in History for many reasons such as in 1942 the Battle of Midway ends as the United States reverses the tide against the previously invincible Japanese navy, in 1099 the Siege of Jerusalem begins during the first Crusade and in 1893 Mohandas Gandhi, then a young Indian lawyer working in South Africa, refuses to comply with racial segregation rules on a South African train and is forcibly ejected from the carriage.
But in Phoenix terms such larger than life events occured as Jason played his first game this season, Anup took his his first wicket and Gindi scored his first run.
Tushar produced a mature batting display getting Phoenix to a match winning score on what was a difficult pitch to bat on and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Tushar for passing one hundred runs for the season thus far.
Well done to Old Isleworthians & Heston for a hard fought & close game and pushing us all the way to the very end. As for Phoenix, we have a mental strength that has grown stronger with the excellant start we had to this season so far. But alas, the spark was missing as bitter criticism replaced positive feedback.
Paul J. Fleyer says good work habits help develop an internal toughness and a self-confident attitude that will sustain you through every adversity and temporary discouragement. So to quote Martin Luther King, Jr. (American Baptist Minister and Civil-Rights Leader. 1929-1968) “We must combine the toughness of the serpent with the softness of the dove, a tough mind and a tender heart.”
