Emmbrook & Bearwood v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 14 Jun 2009 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 78 runs
Match report
A lovely hot & sunny day welcomed everyone and with the sun shining it was another chance for a Phoenix rising. Fabian's legion of gladiators were all ripped and ready for action as confidence was high due to a good run of winning results.
So onto the game versus Emmbrook & Bearwood. The trip was an eventful one as Raaj was running on Apna Standard Scheduling (Time and GPS) : 'I am just one stop away & I will be there in 5 minutes' which means I am miles away and will get there when I get there.
Anyway Emmbrook School was forced to close just recently after a pupil caught swine flu while in the US. So would Phoenix come away happy as larry with a victory or be sick as pigs from a defeat and with two of the Emmbrook & Bearwood players embarking on two great milestones (Phipps making a century & Cutless-Steel taking six wickets) one would expect victoty would be theirs.
Alas this was not the case as Phoenix at the end came to a comfortable win. Anyway lets start with a pretty story of Fabian's election to the papacy has told by Eusebius in his "Ecclesiastical History" (VI,xxix ):
"It is said that Fabian, after the death of Anteros, came from the country along with others and stayed at Rome, where he came to the office in a most miraculous manner, thanks to the divine and heavenly grace. For when the brethren were all assembled for the purpose of appointing him who should succeed to the episcopate, and very many notable and distinguished persons were in the thoughts of many, Fabian, who was there, came into nobody's mind. But all of a sudden, they relate, a dove flew down from above and settled on his head as clear imitation of the descent of the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove upon the Savior; whereupon the whole people, as if moved by one divine inspiration, with all eagerness and with one soul cried out "worthy," and without more ado took him and placed him on the episcopal throne."
Fabian with his own divine inspiration called the coin correct and on winning the toss elected to bat first.
What happened next is now etched in the Hall of Fame as the best ever batting display from a Phoenix batsman. But I will come to that a bit later as first I need to mention a few people. Phoenix batted well and posted a big score of two hundred and sixty two. Contributions from Tushar who made a steady twenty-three as he & Fabian gave the perfect start scoring one hundred and eleven runs in just sixteen overs; from Zee who made a positive twenty-two that held the innings after Fabian's retirement and from Ali who made a fast flowing thirty (which included six fours) in the final few overs to help post a big score.
Many people are fascinated by explosives, but most have no idea what real explosives look like; Power and Precision: An Introduction to Explosives is a documentry directed by Paul Quellin and Mark Ribbands in 2003 that tells you all you need about explosives. Whilst taking of explosives and thus weapns, Thor was the first operational ballistic missile in the arsenal of the United States, operated by the US Air Force.
So onto the man of the moment, the master blaster, the swashbuckling swordsman, the brutal assasin, our very own Fabian Saverimuttu. After a moderately quiet start to the season, based on his own high standards, Fabian produced a batting display of pure power and precision. Fabian after a watchful start exploded into his very own missile launch resembling the God of Thunder, Thor himself, using his Mjolnir with feriocity as he found the boundary with ease.
Fabian hit nineteen fours and three sixes as he blasted, bludgeoned and pillaged to a magnificent & unbeaten one hundred and nineteen as he broke the highest individual score in just twenty three overs. Incredibly he went from thirty-two to seventy in nine balls as he hit one six and eight fours consequently and from eighty to one hundred and ninteen in eleven balls as he hit two sixes and six fours.
His own dove sat on his head and with a call from Sanj telling him off his achievement, Fabain with humility retired his innings and walked off to a standing ovation. Was this the happiest moment of his life, apparently when Sebastian Vettel won the 2009 Chinese Formula One race for Red Bull, a journalist said to him: 'This must be the happiest day of your life,' and he replied: 'You obviously weren't there when I lost my virginity.'
At tea Phoenix knew they could eat well with victory not to far away but Emmbrook & Bearwood would have other ideas. Emmbrook & Bearwood batsman came out postively and if Phoenix thought they had the 'game in the bag' then they thought wrong as Phipps powered his way and keeping up with the run rate. At sixteen overs Emmbrook & Bearwood had scored ninety-eight runs. Fabian then made the changes as he bought Sanj and then himself and the tide began to turn to the favour of Phoenix.
Sanj bowled very well as he dried up the runs for Phipps and thus Emmbrook & Bearwood. Soon later the wickets began to fall and with the loss of Phipps to Sanj all but ending the game. Bob taking his first wicket for Phoenix ended the oppositions innings to celebrations and joyous sounds ringing out from all.
Fabian produced an awesome batting display and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Fabian for passing two hundred runs for the season thus far and to Sanj for his hundreth cap.
Well done to Emmbrook & Bearwoo for being great sports and having an impressive pavillion (& teas) which we have nicknamed the Tardis. As for Phoenix, they showed their true colours today but they should not rest on thier laurels as much improvement is still needed.
To quote Ann Landers (American Advice columnist, 1918-2002) "Class is an aura of confidence that is being sure without being cocky. Class has nothing to do with money. Class never runs scared. It is self-discipline and self-knowledge. It's the sure footedness that comes with having proved you can meet life.”
