Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 72 runs
Match report
So onto the first game of tour which was a fun filled event showcasing on how cricket should be played - beautiful surroundings, excellent facilities, first rate wicket, mutual respect, fun, sportsmanship and talent but enough of the opposition and now onto the game itself. Fabian led his Legion of Warriors in buoyant and jovial spirit to much anticipated game versus Hastings. A warm day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss, the Hastings skipper Adam elected to bat first.
The red wig and the duck hat are the symbols of tour and after dusting them off were ready for the unlucky players.
The Hastings ground is a approved Sussex County Ground which means its an out and out batting track with a super fast outfield so those batsman who have a positive attitude just need to play through the line totally committing to the shot and runs are there for the taking. This what the opposition did especially their captain Adam, who is also the first team's vice captain, as he plundered a century in next to no time with some exquisite batting.
Phoenix stuck to their tasks and battled to the very end but Hastings are a top outfit and after their alloted forty overs had posted a mighty two hundred and ninety two runs. Fabian and Gindi were the pick of the bowlers as they pegged back the Hastings batsman at crucial moments else a score past three hundred was on the cards. At tea, it was about eating the cakes, sharing a joke and the leave the run chase to the top order batsmen.
Fabian and Tushar opened the innings and once again made a century partnership of just thirteen overs giving Phoenix a glimmer of hope but most of all self respect. Fabian breezed to a fast flowing fifty-five (which included eight fours and a six) and Tushar coasting to an effortless forty-one (which included four fours). They were both out soon after and with that Phoenix lost its batting momentum and eventfully fell a few runs short of the winning target.
Phoenix didn't want to go out without a fight and they fought on to a commendable two hundred and two runs with only losing five wickets. Zee held the later part of the innings together as he made a patient fifty-two (which included six fours) with his half century coming off the last ball of the innings. We are still all unsure what Zee was on as he thought he hit a bouncer to the boundary line when we all saw it was a high full toss.
Fabian produced an excellent all round display as he captained well, made runs, took wickets & caught a catch and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Zee for passing two hundred runs and to Gindi for passing ten wickets for the season thus far.
Well done to Hastings for being great & humble hosts and we welcome the invitation for next season. As for Phoenix, the game itself was never about winning or losing since Hastings is a strong side playing in a strong league against some strong sides. After last years tour, Hastings enjoyed the company and the gamesmanship Phoenix represent that they invited us back. So today was about enjoying the banter, absorbing the atmosphere of a county approved ground, playing cricket to the best of our ability and above all having fun. This is what we do and what we do best.
A special mention to Nad who is known to his fellow team mates in a loving manner as Gandhi due to his uncommon likeness and showing the spirit of tour he wore a Nehru cap as both bowled and batted to the respect of the team and to the laughter of the opposition,
To quote George Bernard Shaw (Irish literary Critic, Playwright and Essayist. 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature, 1856-1950) "You cannot believe in honor until you have achieved it, better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world".
