Ottershaw & Hamm v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 09 Aug 2009 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 2 wickets

Match report Tea writer, Bruce Richardson, and veteran photographer, John Gentry, have fulfilled their quest for finding the Great Tea Rooms of Britain. With the assistance of The British Tea Council and its outstanding Guild of Tea Shops, they have put together a fascinating collection of color photographs, narrative, touring tips, and recipes from 22 memorable tea rooms in England, Scotland and Wales. This expanded fifth edition contains over 200 photographs and 25 pages of recipes! Tea lovers who dream of visiting Britain, as well as seasoned travelers, will find this book a valuable guide in planning their next adventure through the British countryside.

It may not be mentioned by Bruce Richardson but take it from the Phoenix collective and collection of bellies that the Ottershaw & Hamm teas are second to none. Was this the only factor in why Jason had many players to select from.

Anyway Nad was in charge as rumours have it that Fabian is in courtship. Reasons for him (Fabian) to wait a long time maybe include getting to know each other, elucidate potential relationship issues and problems and/or making sure there is enough social and economical stability to raise a family. In some societies, the parents or community propose potential partners, and then allow limited dating to determine whether the parties are suited. In Japan, there is a type of courtship called Omiai. In more closed societies, courtship is virtually eliminated altogether by the practice of arranged marriages, where partners are chosen for young people, typically by their parents.

But enough of this and on to the game itself. A warm day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss, the opposition skipper invited Phoenix to bat first in this timed match. Tushar and Noman gave Phoenix the perfect start as they made an eighty-five run partnership opening stand as they scored with ease and at a run rate of nearly five runs per over, at this stage a score over two-hundred runs was indeed gettable and furthermore required.

Alas the Phoenix collapse came about as they then managed to lose ten wickets for only a futher eighty-six runs with only Tushar and Noman really troubling the scorers. Noman was the first to go with a well-made and dogged thirty-two runs (which included two fours) and soon later Tushar fell after he made a tremendous seventy runs (which included ten fours) as tried to hold the innings together. A mention to Keene who bowled expectionally well taking eights wickets.

At tea, Phoenix had posted one hundred and seventy one runs and without baited breath they all went for tea. Tea was slightly longer than usual as both teams were rubbing their bellies gleefully with one eye on the clock and the other on the extra few pieces of invitingly homemade fresh cream sponge cake.

Ottershaw & Hamm had a minor set back losing their opener from a great piece of bowling from Ali and another spectacular catch by Noman in the slips. After that Keene & Hynds took control and commanded the bowling as they put the bad ball away for runs, rotated the strike and played defence went it mattered with Keene making eighty runs & Hynds forty-six runs. Phoenix were on the end of an embrassing defeat as they put on one hundred and thirty runs and needing only forty-one runs from the final fourteen overs left of the game with nine wickets in tact.

Then all of a sudden the Phoenix fightback was on as Rahul and Zee got into the swing of things with their bowling and some sharp run outs by Ali & Nad as only a direct hit were the order of the day. All of a sudden Ottershaw & Hamm began to struggle as they lost seven wickets in the space of eleven overs for only twenty-five runs as in their spell Rahul took three wickets for just thirteen runs off five overs and Zee took two wickets for just nine runs off seven overs.

The game then changed with nineteen balls to go as a chance was spilt by Phoenix hence failing to bring out the number eleven batsman. Alas three balls later the big swinging Sri Lankan Wikersinghe ended the Phoenix fight back as he hit six six and four to win the game for Ottershaw & Hamm with a mighty sigh of relief.

Tushar batted well as his form for this season suggests taking Phoenix to a competetive score and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Tushar for passing four hundred runs for the season thus far.

Well done to Ottershaw & Hamm for once again providing a wonderful environment & atmosphere in which cricket can be played and enjoyed. As for Phoenix even though victory elluded us, we managed to show fighting spirit to the very end and above all staying united as a team & as friends. When Edmund Hillary became the first to succesfully climb Mount Everest, he said "It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves” and this is what Phoenix is about as this game has shown to all why Phoenix was created. Jason, our Director of Cricket, should be a proud of the achievements this club has earned.

To quote Dale Carnegie (American lecturer, author, 1888-1955) “Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.”
