Chertsey v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 26 Jul 2009 at 1.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 43 runs
Match report
With the tour wounds still fresh and some bodies yet not recovered to full fitness, Fabian led his legionnaires on a cold & drizzly day to the place were Phoenix had one of their greatest wins last year - the home of Chertsey. The tale that unfolded here was similar to that of the story that unfolded at Hampton Wick Royal.
Fabian took the game to Chetsey as he opted for an attacking field straight from the off and kept to his guns as his bowlers executed his plans perfectly. Ali & Anup opened the bowling and Anup's first ball got the breakthrough as Sanj took a catch at Mid-on (with the help of Nad's calling). The Chertsey batsman looked comfortable against pace as the runs began to flow with the ball coming on to the bat easily and after just four overs Fabian opted for spin.
Fabian's masterstroke worked with spin doing the trick as the next twenty-seven overs of differing varieties of Off, Leg and Left Arm Orthodox spin conceded only seventy-eight runs and collected eight wickets. Sanj bowled an impeccable line that stemmed the runs instantly that gave the platform from which Nad, Fabian & Rahul could work their magic. Nad with his variations in pace & turn had the batsmen confused taking four wickets with two off them out playing on and one LBW; Fabian with his bounce forced the batsmen into false shots chipping in with two as Raaj took a neat stumping & Zee a neat catch and finally Rahul who got his 'flipper' to work beating the batsman all ends up.
Phoenix bowled Chertsey out in the thirty-sixth over with only one hundred and thirty three runs on the scoreboard. Phoenix's fielding was not at its very best as few slips and mishaps allowed Chertsey a few more runs especially seen as that the highest score for Chertsey was extras.
At tea, Phoenix were in the driving seat and needed to bat sensibly to record another famous win. Alas this wasn't to be as Fabian run out inexplicably badly in the very first over and it never got better from that point onwards. Phoenix were eventually skittled out for ninety as they threw the game away.
Nad bowled brilliantly keeping Chertsey in control when they started to make their charge and for this reason he is named Man of the Match. Also a special mention to Nad for passing two hundred runs and twenty wickets for the season thus far.
Well done to Chertsey who never gave up and had the self belief that they could win. As for Phoenix, the winning and losing was in attitude based on self belief where instead of using the bowling as a confidence factor they allowed the bad fielding to be negative factor that affected their outlook on the game. The difference was that instead of saying 'We can win this since we bowled well' we were saying 'We gave away too many runs & that could cost us'. Cost us it did the combination fielding and the negative attitude. Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you'll start having positive results.
To quote Mahatma Gandhi (Indian Philosopher, internationally esteemed for his doctrine of nonviolent protest, 1869-1948) “A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.”
