Godalming v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 30 Aug 2009 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 6 wickets

Match report So onto the second of three games over the bank holiday weekend with the visit to Godaling where a year ago Tushar and Zee were too tired to field because of their batting efforts - the excuse was I can not run no more so its best if I stood in the slips.

Chikna Chaddi Boy aka Fabian gathered and collected his troops for the long but necessary trip to Godalming. A windy and overcast day welcomed both teams on winning the toss elected to bat first. With the impressive scoreboard overlooking the pitch and an avid & vocal local support this game has always been a tremendous occassion for cricket.

Fabian continued on from where he left off last at High Wycombe and found his form & rhythm quickly. He blasted and bruised his way to another quick fire fifty as he hit ten fours but the team couldnt go on to deliver that knock out punch. Fabian gave Phoenix a great start and at ninety-nine for three of eighteen overs Phoenix looked set for a good score, but alas at the loss of his wicket, the collapse set in as Phoenix were all out for one hundred and thirty three eleven overs later. The only other batsman that shone was Sofian but with wickets falling around him, he tried to up the tempo but was out trying to play an over extravagent shot for a well made twenty-eight runs.

At tea, Phoenix had a huge task ahead of them since they knew they needed to bowl Godalming out if they wanted to win the game. Sofian opened up the bowling and soon enough had his action flowing that resulted in some fearsome quick bowling. The Godalming batsman played and missed more often than not and at his pace, as luck would have it, all the false shots hit by the batsmen elluded the Phoenix fielders and raced to the boundary. Sofian's spell was a true show of fast bowling that was appreciated by all those playing and watching.

Alas the quick breakthough never came and Godalming played out the storm knowing that they had enough overs in hand to chase down the score. Soon enough they upped their tempo and soon Phoenix were chasing leather as Mayne & Forbes both made fifties as they easily chased down the victory target. The funniest moment in the field, and one that still puzzles all alike, was when Jazz ran past the ball and then picked it up beyond the boundary. The most curious moment was Imran getting out to a defensive shot. The most notable moment was that Fabian didn't drop his trousers. The question is why all these incidents - is this an X-files? Where is Mulder & Scully?

Sofian bowled his heart out showing off his raw pace and for this reason he is named Man of the Match.

Well done to Godalming for being great hosts & playing competetive cricket but we are now level with two wins apiece. As for Phoenix, we just didnt do ourselves justice. Everybody's human-everybody makes mistakes. If you laugh it off and keep going and try to give it your best the next time around, people respect that.

To quote Malcolm X (American black militant leader who articulated concepts of race pride and black nationalism in the early 1960s, 1925-1965) “There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.”
