Egham v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sat 12 Sep 2009 at 1pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 6 wickets

Match report An Autumn Summer has come to September and on a beautiful day Fabian gathered up his legions and took them to the early start at Egham. On winning the toss the opposition skipper had no hesitation into electing to bat first and Phoenix knew that if they didn't bowl well then a long day in the field chasing leather would ensue.

Sofian gave the Phoenix the perfect start as his first bowl of the match hit the deck hard, seamed in and too the off stump of the Egham opener. Sofian's pace and David's movement continued to trouble the Egham two and three batsmen but with a lighting fast outfield both well-played and false shots, on passsing the fielders, went racing with ease to the boundary. It seems that the goddess of fortune be it Fortuna, in Roman mythology or Tyche, in Greek mythology must been with the England side as they were beating the Australians to avoid a seven-nil whitewash.

It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings when Rahul produced a bit of magic in the field as he chased & pulled up the ball from reaching the cover boundary and with a great & quick arm he made a direct hit on the stumps he ran out the Egham batsman who was looking for a second run.

Over the seasons the triplets of spin have been the main contributers of 'wickets' but now to the fold we can add the triads of pace. The calls of old like 'spin it to win it' & 'spin that spiders web' where replaced by 'you can't win the race of if you can't face the pace' & 'who do you think you are, Waqar Younis?.

A triathlon is a multi-sport endurance event consisting of swimming, cycling, and running. Like the triathlon, the Phoenix triads of pace show similar qualities as Sofian bowling action flows like water, David steers the ball both into and away from the batsman and Ali steams in with all guns blazing.

The Phoenix's Triad of Pace then took control as they blitzed the Egham batting with their pace, movement and accuracy as the hurried and rushed their opponents like in the Judges 20:37 The ambushers hurried and rushed on Gibeah. Egham soon relented to the pressure upon them and finally were all out for eighty-five runs.

At tea, with a variety of cakes and normal & toasted sandwiches galore Phoenix could eat well knowing that a small target was there to chase. Phoenix came out to bat knowing a good start was needed but the infamous collapse is always looming and with that Phoenix got off to the worst possible of starts as they lost three quick wickets with just twelve runs added to the scoreboard.

Gupi and Sofian then calmed everyones nerves as they wondered what all the fuss was about as they then decided to take the attack to Egham. They played fearlessly as they hit over the top with and what could have been a tricking period they overcame it with ease as the flurry of boundaries came with ease.

Gupi made an effortless forty-one runs (which included seven fours and a six) and Sofian showed glimpses of what he can do with a well made twenty-eight runs (which included four fours and a six) has they both took Phoenix home to a comfortable win.

Gupi batted with ease as Phoenix looked in trouble after losing four early wickets and for this reason he is named Man of the Match.

Also a special mention to Gupi for passing one hundred runs and to Ali for passing twenty wickets for the season thus far.

Well done to Egham for being great hosts and providing even better facilities where cricket can be enjoyed as both a player and a spectator. As for Phoenix, a wonderful win against a good side in which we as a team stayed focused & fused but above all never let the fun and jokes stop.

To quote the slogan of the Tupamaros (also known as the MLN (Movimiento de Liberación Nacional or National Liberation Movement), was an urban guerrilla organization in Uruguay in the 1960s and 1970s) “Words divide us, actions unite us.”
