Bank Of England v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sat 05 Jun 2010 at 2.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 2 wickets
Match report
A nightmare of days precded the game versus Bank of England with players cancelling last minute but Phoenix always gets a side out even if they have to look into the beyond to find cricketing talent. After scouring the universe and beyond two such souls were found with one being called Aslan (was it Aslan, the "Great Lion", the central character in The Chronicles of Narnia, a series of seven fantasy novels for children written by C. S. Lewis) and the other being Yaks (In Star Wars, Very little is known about this alien called Yak Face who can be seen lurking about Jabba the Hutt's palace. Nonetheless this being's true name is believed to be Saelt-Marae, though no one knows for sure).
To the outside world it seemed our team has many followers, which include vast numbers of Banthas, Ewoks, Jawas, Wookiee and other such talking beasts like Centaurs, Fauns, Dryads, Dwarfs, Satyrs, Naiads, Hamadryads, Mermaids, Silvans, Unicorns, and Winged Horses. Why life at the Phoenix can not be simple no one knows and the biggest pondering point is where are Lando Calrissian and Bobba Fett?
Anyway a hot day welcomed both team at the Bank of Englands sport ground and Sanj on winning the toss had no hesitation in batting first. To quote Nathan Mayer Rothschild (16 September 1777 – 28 July 1836 was one of the founders of the Rothschild family international banking dynasty) "Give me control of a nation's money and I care not who makes her laws" - could Phoenix take control?
All seemed doomed as Phoenix were out for a paltry one hundred and twenty eights runs with only Shaunak and Rowdy making any sizeable contributions. Shaunak smashed four fours and a six for a well made twenty-six runs before he was triggered LBW and Rowdy bamboozled everyone has he smashed six fours and a six for an effortless thirty-four before he played one shot too many. On a happier note Rohit scored his first run for the Phoenix when he came in to bat at number eleven.
Tea was served on fine china with a selection of sandwiches and cakes which included salmon & cottage cheese delights and beautifully crafted scones (served with jam & cream of course).
Phoenix came out on the field needing a fire from the hip at the off if they wanted to give Bank of England a good game and indeed this was done. Shaunak ripped open the top order and with Sanj also getting into the action early Bank of England were struggling so much so that two of their colts came to the crease. Sanj at this point rested his fast bowling option and he brought on the Phoenix Colts. Gareth and Vishal then came into the attack and they bowled a spell of twelve overs for twenty five runs taking two wickets.
The moment of the game which could have won the game for Phoenix was when Vishal dropped a skier of a chance but all credit to him for making the call and having the guts to go for the catch. With the colts still at the crease the quick bowlers began to bowl spin and with eight players down and ten runs to win, Bank of England got to the winning total with a few overs to spare.
The man of the match award goes to Gareth who performed with great ability and enthusiasm on his debut as he made runs, took a wicket and took a catch. The half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Varun who had a moment of 'Lost In Translation' as he ran himself out when the other batsman didnt understand his call of 'Run'.
Bank of England as always conduct themselves in the very best of manners and play the game in the way it should be played. As for Phoenix, they could have easily won the game if the quick bowlers were given the freedom to express themselves but Phoenix do care about the laws of cricket and the spirit of the game. Bank of England applauded Phoenix's attitude and said well-played with the gesture truely appreciated.
To quote John Fitzgerald Kennedy (American 35th US President (1961-63), 1917-1963) “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
