Exford v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Fri 14 Jul 2006 at 2.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 5 wickets
Match report
On the B3224, the main route East-West across the moor, Exford is a village famous for hunting, shooting, fishing and riding. The Devon & Somerset Staghounds have had their kennels in Exford since 1875.
The tour of duty called and many virgin 'tour' soldiers were taken to the battle front once again as Jason led his troops to Exford for the second of four games. A scorcher of a day welcomed both teams with spirits high but the bodies tired everyone was looking for a relaxing afternoon of cricket.
On winning the toss Jason had no hesitation in batting first. After losing Tushar early, Darius and Jim settled in and got the scored board ticking over nicely. Darius's batting was looking elegant as always and Jim was rock solid as we have come accustomed too. Then a bizarre sequence of events happened.
Darius came of the field retired hurt with stomach cramps, Jim came off the field to look after him, we lost two quick wickets of Mitul & Bob, Jim came back in & then left the field retired hurt on thirty four with a calf strain and finally Shiv ran out Indi on a mis-field. From sixty five for one off fifteen overs Phoenix were after this hiccup on one hundred and seventeen for four (with a man out injured) after twenty nine overs.
Darius went back in and with Shiv had an uphill struggle to form a partnership so to make a respectable score. They soon found their feet were cutting loose with some excellent shot making. Shiv looking positive on thirty seven (which included three fours and a six) was run out in the thirty fifth over which resulted in a second mini collapse. In the next over Tushar and Ali went for consecutive balls and Darius was then sensationally caught when on forty eight (which included six fours) which concluded a hat-trick for Bawden.
Phoenix finally limped to one hundred and eighty off their allocated forty overs.
Phoenix came out all guns blazing in trying to restrict Exford's scoring. Mitul bowled with accuracy and took a wicket in the first over, Ali bowled with pace with the batsman struggling to score and Vishal bowled with great control taking wickets at crucial points. After twenty overs Exford needed one hundred fourteen runs to win with five wickets in hand.
Phoenix Achilles heal then played its part has Phoenix's fielding fell apart as mis-fields went for four and catches were being misjudged & dropped. An extra forty runs were conceded this way as Exford went on to chase victory with eleven balls to spare.
Well done to Exford for an excellent comeback which helped to create an exciting days cricket. Phoenix need to do better in the field if games like this are to be won.
