Overstowey v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 16 Jul 2006 at 2.30pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Won 63 runs
Match report
Before the Norman Conquest Over Stowey formed part of a royal hunting park, which belonged to a succession of Anglo-Saxon kings, from Alfred the Great to Harold. The Doomsday book records that William the Conqueror gave the estate of Stowey to Alfred d'Epaignes, who probably built the castle, of which remains can still be seen in the field a short distance north of the church.
The tour of duty called and many virgin 'tour' soldiers were taken to the battle front once again as Jason led his troops to Overstowey for the fourth of four games. A scorcher of a day welcomed both teams with the battle weary non-stop playing players looking to end the tour on a high and quickly go to their homes for some well deserved rest and recovery.
A lovely batting track on a quaint ground surrounded by waves of green and up above by seas of blue was presented to Jason as the opposing captain offered us first use of the track as we were the touring side. A nice gesture appreciated by all.
This day was to be a fabulous day for Fabian who batted fearlessly in his pursuit of runs as he majestically wielded his willow producing some sublime stroke play. He made a brilliant sixty nine (which included twelve fours and a six) helping Phoenix to a great start they needed.
But tragedy struck and no Abba weren't singing as Phoenix collapsed from ninety nine for two in the sixteenth over to one hundred and sixteen for six in the twenty second over.
In came Jim and Shiv who didn’t allow Jason's ship to sink but continued the battle and set sail for a huge total. Jim fought with a dogged persistence scoring a patient thirty one (which included three fours), Shiv went after the bowling with relentless ease scoring a brilliant thirty four (which included five fours) and with the help of Ali who came in and hit two might blows, one for four and the other for six, helped Phoenix reach a very challenging two hundred and thirteen.
The Owerstowey batsman went straight for the run chase hitting fours with ease as they lay down the gauntlet to Phoenix. Something needed to be done to stem the flow of runs and get Phoenix back in the hunt for victory.
Up stepped Ali who changed the game to Phoenix's favour as he took two wickets in two balls - the first wicket was a cleverly disguised slower ball deceiving the batsman & hitting the stumps and the second was a fantastic catch taken by Darius flying to his right as he kept wicket.
The captain was still in on forty nine (which included seven fours and two sixes) and looking to take the game back into Overstowey's grip but Sanj bowled a beauty of a delivery which took his stumps and with it the chance for victory.
Jason at this point gave everyone else a bowl in which a total of nine bowlers were used. Phoenix eased to a sixty three run victory as the run rate was too steep to maintain.
Well done to Phoenix for an emphatic win.
A special mention to Overstowey for a great day of cricket, lovely teas and splendid hospitality which made everyone have fun and in turn allowed the game to be played in the spirit it should be.
