Cypos v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 06 Aug 2006 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 4 wickets
Match report
A Poisoned Chalice - something that harms the person it is given to although it seemed very good when they first got it. The leadership of the party turned out to be a poisoned chalice.
After last weeks dismal display Phoenix went out to claw back some dignity they had lost. A warm & humid day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss Jason elected to bat first.
Fabian & Shiv opened the innings for Phoenix and they quickly found their rhythm scoring runs at ease. Fabian continuing his batting form with another fabulous knock has he played with precision and power with shots of the highest quality. He made a brilliant sixty which included eleven fours.
At drinks Phoenix reached ninety two for the loss of Shiv and a big total looked possible.
It is something about 'having drinks' that has become a poisoned chalice for the team since Phoenix always lose a wicket in the very first over bowled after the drinks break and soon after have a mini collapse on their hands. Today was no different as Phoenix went from ninety two for one in the twenty first over to one hundred and forty two for seven in the twenty eighth.
Five batsmen scored fifteen runs plus and looked comfortable but couldn't go on to score further as dubious shot selection caused them to lose their wickets. Phoenix's final score was one hundred and seventy eight in which twenty eight fours were hit but everyone know that we needed at least two hundred on this track with the electric outfield.
Phoenix had to field well if they wanted to win the game. The bowlers bowled well but the fielding as per always was the root cause as Phoenix's leaked runs - misfields went for fours & threes, singles went to fielders who were in close to stop the run being scored and catches were dropped at crucial points of the game (Cypos's batsmen Emslie and Sritharan were dropped and went on to score a half century).
In the absence of the regular wicketkeepers (Darius, Tusher & Noman) Jason kept for the first time and performed very well as he took three catches and let only one bye through.
As Cypos closed on the score they lost four quick wickets but the task of either bowling them out or restricting the scoring was too much for Phoenix and Cypos hit the winning runs in the thirty seventh over.
Well done to Cypos for a well deserved win and showing great camaraderie which made it a fun day for all involved. See you next year.
To quote 'The Past: Our cradle, not our prison; there is danger as well as appeal in its glamour. The past is for inspiration, not imitation, for continuation, not repetition.” So Phoenix lets continue to learn from our mistakes for it will help us improve individually and thus collectively as a team.
