Godalming v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 30 Jul 2006 at 2pm
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 5 wickets
Match report
IBF - International Boxing Federation is one of many organizations which sanction world championship boxing bouts.
Michael Buffer - boxing announcer from the USA
After last weeks win in Reading, the Phoenix Fighters drank two big jugs in celebration of 'fifty runs scored and five wickets taken'. Each jug full of the wonderous amber nectar was guzzled with glee. The Phoenix Fighters never do say no when asked to enjoy themselves on two large & jugs to quench their thirst. As we all say 'The bigger the better, the more the merrier'. So with good cheer and fine spirits Jason led his side to Surrey for the tough challenge at Godalming.
A warm day and a suspect track welcomed both teams and on losing the toss Jason was asked to bat first.
After a tricky start with the loss of both Zahir and Varun, Darius and Fabian began to imprint their own legacy on the game with some excellent & sublime stroke play. They both played each ball with merit as the pitch was playing up showing its inconsistency. The bad balls were punished for fours whilst the good balls were nudged for runs as they kept the scoreboard ticking over.
Fabian blasted his way to twenty six (which included five fours) and Darius went on to score his maiden Phoenix half cenutry as he showed a maturity beyond his age. Darius exquisitely drove and clipped his way to a superb fifty two which included eight fours.
Then as Phoenix looked set to post a big score they collapsed as they lost the next eight wickets for fifty one runs in the space of twelve overs.
Phoenix were bowled out in the thirty fourth over of a timed game for one hundred and fifty seven. Would Phoenix pay the price of not batting out the entitled time? Phoenix needed to bowl and field well if they wanted to compete in this game.
But as early in the fourth over, Michael Buffer could be heard saying 'lets get ready to rumble' as Phoenix were crowned the undisputed IBF (Inevitable Bad Fielding) champions of the world. By the sixth over, chance after chance (everyone lost count at five) were being put down as Phoenix threw the game away.
The opposing batsmen coundn't believe their luck and began to punish Phoenix's mistakes. By the twentieth over the game was finished as Godalming emphatically beat Phoenix by 5 wickets.
Well done to Godalming for a wonderful game & much enjoyed banter and see you next year.
As for Phoenix, their Achilles Heel is there for all to see and more practise is needed to heal this wound.
