O.C.Traditionalists v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 04 Jun 2006 at 2pm

Match report
Hermes, in Greek mythology, is the god of boundaries and of the travellers who cross them.
In the traditional belief system of Meiteis, it is the God of Handicrafts (Leismbi) who taught Meiteis the method of weaving.
Leading upto the match, the Weather God hasn't been too kind on the ground staff and the players. There have been constant showers which has seen the past two games cancelled but the Sun has held its nerve and kept on shining.
Jason and his Argonauts set sail on a short voyage to Totteridge but it seems these travellers must have forgotten to give praise to Hermes. For what was went to be a quick crossing turned out to be a Poseidon Adventure where a forty five minute journey took almost two hours.
All was not lost as the patient O.C.Traditionalists team welcomed us wanting still to play a 40 over match. The pitch itself was set in a enclave surrounded by the greens of trees and bushes.
Jason won the toss and in the heat of the day opted to bat first.
Phoenix after a hiccup of losing Jim early made a fiery start with Zubin and Riaz finding the boundaries with ease as they made a seventy one run partnership in just 11 overs. Zubin continued to amaze & dazzle us all with his fine form and quickly looked the part with some elegant driving and precision placement as he raced to thirty six (which included six fours). Riaz showed what a talent he is with some awesome stroke play and he powered his way to thirty five (which included four fours and one six).
Then disaster struck as Phoenix were bowled out for one hundred and twenty three of thirty one overs - the heart of the failure was Phoenix losing nine wickets for fifty runs in eighteen overs. OC bowled well but the difference was that they field and caught exceptionally well - as soon as Phoenix was about to dominate they produced something special.
The game was not lost as the pitch was start to play slowly and Phoenix needed to emulate OC fielding if they wanted to win the game.
Phoenix opened up with the fire of Riaz and the movement of Furqan. The breakthrough was made in the second over by Furqan and with the pitch playing slowly turned to his spin options. Sanjeev bowled well and after a lose first over soon found his rhythm and had the batsman in trouble. Zubin kept the pressure up with some tight bowling and Riaz with his pace was very hard to get away. After Sanjeev's spell ended (with him finishing with three wickets), Fabian continued in the same vain with superb control.
OC were finding it very hard to score above three runs an over and victory seemed & looked possible.
But it seems Phoenix must have angered another god, Leismbi, for Phoenix were not at their best in the field. Let alone weave a basket the Phoenix fielders would have trouble tying it up with a thick rope. Three crucial dropped catches was the difference between winning and losing - Ronnie and Bastyra were the lucky ones who were given a chance when they were both on two & zero respectively.
Ronnie played brilliantly for an unbeaten seventy seven and Bastyra with hard fought determination stayed with him as they made a fifty partnership and pushed OC to the winning line.
The game was on a knife edge, with OC needing thirty runs to win off thirty balls. Phoenix had the upper hand but Ronnie was set and Harris looking to smash his way out, OC ,with the help of Leismbi, reached their target with an over to spare.
Well done to OC for a fabulous game and great banter - a fun day out for all.
Until next year we bade you goodbye.
