Match report
Dedication - the act of binding yourself (intellectually or emotionally) to a course of action
After careful thought Jason, for personal reasons, took the decision to 'take a break from cricket' until the end of the season. So thank you Jason for all your efforts, both on and off the field, in establishing Phoenix in its inaugural season.
The work performed by Jason can be simply expressed by a quote from Albert Schweitzer, French philosopher & physician, 'You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it's a little thing, do something for others - something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it'.
So today Jim was in charge. A cloudy day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss he had no hesitation in electing to bat first. The Old Centralians bowlers kept Jim and Darius at bay as they bowled with excellent line and extravagant swing bowling. They looked in control as the Phoenix's batsman played defensively on what was a favourable bowling track and thus restricted the scoring as Phoenix scored forty five off the first sixteen overs.
Jim and Darius gave away a couple of chances which the Old Centralians did not take but once they settled in Christmas came early has records began to tumble where many 'firsts' were achieved and personal best surpassed.
Phoenix made a massive two hundred and forty four runs off the allotted forty overs with losing only three wickets. Jim made a superb sixty four (which included ten fours and a six) with excellent placement, Darius made a brilliant one hundred and six (which included thirteen fours and two sixes) showing his full repertoire of shots and sublime technique, Fabian powered away to another quick fire twenty five (which included four fours) and Shiv played an 'Afridi Innings' bludgeoning his way to twenty nine (which included four fours and a six) of just nine balls.
After tea, Sanj bowled with a control and Farhan aka Rowdy bowled with passion producing late swing had the Old Centralians batsmen thinking. With the run rate over six an over the batsmen needed to get runs quickly which forced their demise. Rowdy took three wickets in quick succession to put Old Centralians on the back foot and then later on in the innings Ali raced in to mop up the tail with four wickets of his own.
Phoenix's achilles heel of fielding was put to rest as they produced their best effort off the season with Fabian taking a stunning left handed catch with the ball above is head in the covers, Darius diving in from mid-wicket to take a fine catch, Kurren's excellent wicket keeping with two catches and a stumping, Vishal's stunning stop at backward square leg and excellent ground work from Shiv, Indi & Varun.
The Old Centralians inning came to an end in the thirty eighth over as they were bowled out for one hundred and fifty two giving Phoenix a ninety two run victory.
Well battled Old Centralians for making a fun game and well done Phoenix for a great performance.
So let the record breaking song be sung with the late Roy Castle being proud:
'Dedication, dedication
Dedication, that's what you need
If you wanna be the best
If you wanna beat the rest
Oh-oh dedication's what you need;
If you wanna be a record break-er, Oooooh.'
