Stony Stratford v Phoenix Cricket Club Phoenix on Sun 15 Apr 2012 at 13:30
Phoenix Cricket Club Lost 6 wickets
Match report
Day two of the Pre-season tour and another cold and overcast day welcomed Kully and his Bhangra boys. Kully won the toss and elected to bat. Phoenix scored fluently to reach two hundred and sixteen in their allotted forty overs but this could have been much more as the Stony Stratford fielding was awesome to say the least with terrific ground fielding and brilliant catching.
Kully hit six fours and a six to a well made fifty, Lav hit six fours and a six to an aggressive forty two, Wendel hit six fours and a six to an exciting fifty one, Fabian hit a four and six to a quick nineteen and Sudesh hit two fours and a six to an entertaining thirty two. Five of the top six batsman made runs but none of them went on to hit a big score and this was the difference in the chase but ultimately the Phoenix fielding was the Achilles heal that lead to defeat.
A Day at the Races is a Marx brother’s movie of 1937. It tells the story of a vet posing as a doctor, a race horse owner and his friends struggle to help keep a sanitarium open with the help of a misfit racehorse. A quote from the movie:
Tony: Have you got a woman in here?
Dr. Hackenbush: If I haven't, I've wasted thirty minutes of valuable time.
Seems like the Phoenix fielding needed a woman as it seemed a terrible waste of time in field for the team. Sanj bowled well as the opposition batting couldn’t get him away as he was not hit even for a single boundary and
Wendel bowled impressively without luck as his leg-spin rippers were a bit too good for the batsman to get an edge. Barring the few, the Phoenix fielding was non-existent where no runs were turned into singles, singles into two's and two's into three's and this lack of pressure on the Stony batsman allowed them freedom to score. Three of the opposition batsman made runs with one of the openers getting a century, the other opener hitting sixty not out and batsman number five hitting a quick fifty as they chased down the score in the penultimate over with ease
The man of the match award goes to Sudesh for his swash buckling performance. The half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Wendel for the tomato incident. A special mention to Wendel for passing hundred runs for the season thus far.
Congratulations to Stony Stratford on their win. As for Phoenix, regardless of win and defeat we have let ourselves down by allowing our own high standards to fall. We are a team and we need to encourage each other but as always standards lie within the individuals concerned. Let those who are better to set the example for the rest to follow. You can become an even more excellent person by constantly setting higher and higher standards for yourself and then by doing everything possible to live up to those standards.
To quote David Ogilvy (Scottish born British military intelligence officer and later top advertising executive, 1911-1999) “Set exorbitant standards, and give your people hell when they don't live up to them. There is nothing so demoralizing as a boss who tolerates second rate work.”
