Match report
After three weeks of rain and cancelled matches, a sunny day welcomed the Phoenix side for the joust against the Bank Of England. Fabian was the skipper as he he led his legion of players through the quaint towns of Kew, Mortlake, Barnes & Sheen to our final destination in Roehampton. With the sun shining high in the sky everyone were out in their whites be it for some cricket or some lawn tennis. An unsurprisingly dapper day for all with tea served on china with prawn mayonnaise sandwiches and scones (jam, butter & cream) awaiting us all in a few hours time.
The Day They Robbed the Bank of England is a 1960's movie by John Guillermin (He also directed The Towering Inferno (1974), Death on the Nile (1978) & King Kong (1976)). London at the turn of the century. Three men are on a mission from the IRA to steal all the gold in the vaults of the Bank of England. Norgate, their leader, discovers the bank's weak spot: an old forgotten sewer straight under the vaults.
Fabian won the toss and elected to field first in this timed game. All looked swimmingly easy as Rowdy and Sanj bowled in tandem and restricting the opposition to thirty seven for four wickets at the twenty over interval drinks.
The sun was out, everyone was in a joyous mood and laughter could be heard as it echoed across the ground. Fabian in an effort to give everyone a game he rang the changes - make changes to something, not because it needs changing but just in order to make it more interesting, more attractive.
At tea Bank of England made one hundred and forty eight runs in forty four overs. Fabian came out all guns blazing and blasted his way to thirty one runs which included three fours and two sixes before he got out to a man whose cricket sweater was older than him. He had set the basis for a good run chase but unfortunately wickets to tumble on the other end. Vishal then came in and after a thoughtful start got into the groove but was eventually out for a well made forty one which included six fours as he tried to up the run rate so to win the game. The game finally ended up as draw with Solomon and Vijay batting out with ease. Phoenix never managed to rob the bank with victory but they faced nine overs less in their innings and it is believed that if we had the same amount of overs then the nervy tale would have wagged and not gone defensive.
The man of the match award goes to Vishal for his top score and the half man and half amazing BDM Amazer award goes to Fabian & Sanj for not looking at the umpire thus destroying the illusion of chucking.
A special mention to Bank Of England who as always are great hosts and play the game in the same manner as the Phoenix. As for Phoenix, keep the jokes & humour flowing as it infects everyone with laughter and above all a joyous mood. Its contagious in uniting everyone.
To quote Mark Twain (American Humorist, Writer and Lecturer. 1835-1910) “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.”
